The Coloane Hill Crab

in #yangyang • 6 days ago

The Coloane hill crab (Nanhaipotamon macau) is a rare freshwater crab species endemic to Macau. Discovered in the lush, protected hills of Coloane Island, this small, nocturnal crustacean represents a unique fragment of the city's hidden subtropical biodiversity.

With an estimated population of only around 300 individuals remaining in the wild, it lives primarily around clean freshwater streams and damp burrows. Because it is entirely native and found nowhere else on Earth, the crab faces critical threats from rapid urban expansion, habitat fragmentation, and pollution. It serves as a vital indicator of Macau's local ecosystem health, highlighting the urgent need for ongoing wetland and forest conservation efforts.
