You mean he is the painter himself? He must be really talented. There's a lot to wonder about his work, is he well-known? Did you read something about him that made you see that expression that way? ( the murder part)
Yes, this a famous Dutch painter Carel Willink, the old guy hunted for a young girl (at that time je waant famous and in debt), first she was his model, next she turned into a living portrait. He even made her personal makeup which could remain for many days.
He dumped her and she died a mysterious death. The killer never been caught. They simply did not solve the murder and let it be. So Mathilda turned into a cold case.
