When Expertise Meets a New Culture
Daybook October 1
Experienced clinicians do not become experienced faculty simply by entering academia. They enter a new professional culture with its own language, hidden rules, documents, assessment practices, and expectations. Autonomy without orientation can feel less like trust and more like abandonment, especially when performance is closely observed. A trustworthy academic culture makes essential expectations visible: it provides templates, explains the WHY, identifies required standards, names who can answer questions, and then gives faculty room for professional judgment.
