When a Nurse Recognizes the Nurse in You
Daybook October 3
Professional identity is not formed only through credentials, titles, or private self-understanding. It is also shaped relationally, through moments when patients, learners, and colleagues recognize nursing values in how a person acts. Such feedback can sustain meaning during difficult periods, especially when it confirms a professional identity the educator wants to live. Yet identity-affirming praise should not become a demand for perfection or self-sacrifice. A trustworthy nursing identity must have room for competence, care, judgment, boundaries, vulnerability, and dignity.
