Mentor Toward Independence and Visibility
Daybook September 29
Great mentoring does more than help learners perform well under supervision. It helps them learn independently, develop professional identity, see ethical and professional behavior modeled in practice, and enter the profession as active participants. The mentor provides structure, feedback, challenge, and opportunity, but gradually releases control. Professional visibility—such as meaningful participation in presentations or scholarly activities—can expand a learner’s sense of belonging and possibility when participation is genuine, voluntary, and fairly credited.
