THIS SAYING WAS HIDDEN FROM THEM

SUNDAY 25

“But they understood none of these things; this saying was hidden from them, and they did not know the
things which were spoken.”
Luke 18:34 (NKJV)

READ: Luke 18:31–34

In this Luke chapter 18, from verse 31 to 34, Jesus spoke about His sufferings and crucifixion and resurrection again, but the disciples could not understand it; because it was hidden to them.

One of the reasons they could not understand the issue was because they were bewildered—confused and perplexed. Saying in their thoughts, how come, or how could someone we know to have been the coming Messiah would just be subjected to such treatment and be killed? They could not believe it, and they could not comprehend it, thus, they would not want to give it a thought, neither accept nor believe it.

But Jesus was telling them what was imminently going to happen, but they find it difficult to believe and accept.
Jesus at the time was still young in age; He was roughly or approximately 33 years of age. How would He be killed?

The ministry was new, He just started the work—would everything just end like that? It was difficult for them to
believe and agree with what was being said.

Now, the doings of God cannot be disputed, and they should not be disputed by any believer. If your ministry would be for a period of time, a space of time, or it would be small or minute, do not be bothered about it.

The most important of it should be the purpose of what you are raised and asked to do. Your ministry or assignment might not be a big ministry, so to speak, and it might look insignificant in the sight of men, but in God’s overall plan for His kingdom on earth; it is important and significant.

It is not about what men say about your assignment but what God says.

Does what you are asked to do, and you are doing, fulfilling God’s intended purpose and will? If it does, then, give all the glory to God and face the work and do it passionately. It is not how big, but how faithful you are in the doing of the work.

To some people what you are doing might not be meaningful, they may consider it insignificant, but God is the One who will give commendation to everyone, not at all about human opinions.

2 Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.
3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by a human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself.
4 For I know of nothing against myself, yet I am not justified by this; but He who judges me is the Lord.
5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one’s praise will come from God.
1 Corinthians 4:2–5 (NKJV)

Some people’s work would be foundational. Their work would be a kind of foundation which others would build on. What they do might not all that big, and might not be long in duration or time, but their work is significant to what would later be done by others (Acts 9:10–19). What they do, their work, would be a kind of foundational work
which others who are coming behind would build upon.

Example:
Ananias who was simply called a certain disciple in the book of Acts of the Apostles was the one used to pray for
Paul to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit and for his sight, that was lost on his way to Damascus, be restored (Acts 9:17,18). This Ananias was never mentioned again in the Book of Acts but his assignment was significant and instrumental to the steadfastness of Paul and the commencement of his apostolic ministry.

Yours is just to be faithful in whatever you are assigned to do, either big or small. God is watching. Your work may
just be a kind of sample that will give directions to others who would be coming after you. Remember, all you need is to be faithful.

Jesus’ work, His earthly ministry, was not long in duration, and could also be considered not to be big, but He successfully laid the foundation which the church of the living God would be built.

Thus, endeavour to build according to the pattern given to you by God:
“who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, ‘SEE THAT YOU MAKE ALL THINGS ACCORDING TO THE PATTERN SHOWN YOU
ON THE MOUNTAIN’” (Hebrews 8:5 (NKJV).

Peace.

Reflect:
• Is there any truth of Scripture that has been hidden from you because your heart was busy with other things?
• Ask God today to open your understanding.
