in #ulog • 11 days ago (edited)

🌿💐🌿 I want to thank my mom on my birthday for the sacrifices she made giving me a happy life and ensure my success. She sent me to Catholic Schools and Colleges to ensure I got the best education where she squeezed out the money to pay for it. I was her investment. It helped my focus and gave me a work ethic I carried with me all my life. It taught me how to respect people. I miss her so much and the kindness she showed me. I lost my mom when I was 23 and worked with her at the hospital. Though she was very strict with me growing up and taught me humanity and how to be humble. She told me to be grateful for everything that wasn't a struggle and to focus and work hard when times were a struggle. She taught me how to be happy with almost nothing and to always be optimistic seeing the positive things in life instead of being miserable when things weren't perfect. She showed me life doesn't have to be perfect for happiness. She told me for every valley there will always be a mountain. Going around will teach you nothing. Climbing it will teach you strength and endurance to handle almost anything. She taught me that I was responsible for my own happiness and to love who I am and ignore the mean kids. She loved music and sang the popular songs to me, grabbing me up for a Lindy dance in the living room. She taught me how to draw. My happiness was drawing in different mediums, sitting on the floor listening to the radio, gardening in my backyard, typing out stories, reading books. I loved playing with my cats, birds and dog. We handed change to bums on the street down on their luck. We had no car so taking the bus was exciting for me. The smell of diesel brings me memories. We lived next to the hospital were my mom worked. The nurses from the Phillipines that lived in the nurses residence next to the hospital babysat me when I was young while my mom worked. When I got older they took me to Chinatown on the train to go food shopping. My apartment building was a cultural delight where Physicians from India, Africa and the Middle East lived. The foods were fabulous. As I got older I babysat for their children. Neighbors from Puerto Rico, Saudi Arabia, Dominican Republic would keep an eye on you as you walked up the block to the store. I loved playing Double Dutch jump rope on our side walk. The ten huge soft chocolate chip cookies for $1 and Yodels and Lipton Noodle Soup were my favorite snacks. I loved looking out the window to watch the full moon come up and always felt it was a good friend. I loved watching the planes on the horizon to the east flying down the coast as they lowered off view into JFK or Laguardia airports. Sometimes on a clear night you could see the lights at the top of the Whitestone Bridge. Of course you could see the NYC skyline from my back window before 1974 because the Yonkers General Hospital new building wasn't built yet next door blocking the view. Another favorite memory was when my dad was late coming home after 7pm at night, I would run down the street to the hospital, walk up the beautiful circular marble stairs of the hospital and fall asleep under the Grandfather Clock waiting for my mom to get off work at 12 midnight. My mom was loved by everyone who worked with her but mostly by her patients. There was always an off duty Yonkers cop moonlighting as security sitting at a desk. The treats of Dancing, singing and playing guitar came later. My Grandfather clock reminds me of home and my mom. Because mom was home 🌹
