Super Eagles Begin AFCON 2027 Qualifiers Against Madagascar
The Nigeria Super Eagles will aim to make a winning start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign when they welcome Madagascar to the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo after failed to qualify for the FIFA world cup twice in 2022 and 2026.
Nigerians will be happy to see the Super Eagles live tonight in Uyo, Akwa Ibọn capital, popularly known as the nest of champion. The last time Nigeria faced Madagascar, back in 2019, the Super Eagles suffered a surprising and disappointing 2–0 defeat. But football has changed, and this is a completely different Nigeria.
A new squad, a new spirit, a new manager, and a different approach to the game. I expect the Super Eagles to approach this match with confidence, control possession, and impose themselves from the start. For me, the key will be the defence. We need to stay solid, organised and avoid giving Madagascar unnecessary opportunities. I expect Nigeria to control the game and create enough chances to get the job done.
Eric Chelle will be without the injured Victor Osimhen for the game, with the Galatasaray man expected to be replaced by either Akor Adams or Taiwo Awoniyi. Nigeria have won three of their five previous clashes, drawn one and lost one, scoring five goals and conceding two.
After facing Madagascar today, Nigeria will turn their attention to a trip to Bissau for next Tuesday’s clash against the Wild Dogs, leaving little margin for error as only one team will secure automatic qualification from the group due to Tanzania’s automatic place as one of the tournament’s co-hosts.
Nigeria, three-time AFCON champions in 1980, 1994 and 2013, have reached the semi-finals of the last two editions, and the minimum expectation will be to qualify for next year’s tournament in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, scheduled for June 19 to July 17.
I'm rooting for Super Eagles to win next AFCON to make it the fourth in history. With Coach Erik Sekou Chelle, Nigeria national football team have achieved a lot in terms of improvements in their style of play and win percentage. It's clear that the coach understands the players he parade in the team.
Pará, te juro que la foto del Godswill Akpabio Stadium me dejó con la piel de gallina, y ese 2‑0 que nos dieron a los Eagles en 2019 todavía me da rencor, ndaje.
