Scientists want to sift moon dust for tiny bits of alien technology

This is the kind of idea I'd expect to find in a novel, not in a journal submission.

A team led by Lewis Pinault, an affiliate scientist at the SETI Institute, has put out a study proposing that we look for alien technology on the Moon. Not a crashed ship. Not a buried monolith. They mean specks. Engineered particles about 0.3 microns across, way too small to see without a microscope.

The reasoning goes like this. If there were technological civilisations elsewhere in the galaxy, they probably made durable material, either on purpose or as debris. Some of that dust would drift out into interstellar space. Over hundreds of millions to billions of years, a small amount of the tough, heat-resistant stuff could cross thousands of light years and end up here. The Moon has no atmosphere and no weather, so anything that lands slowly enough not to vaporise just sits there in the soil.

The practical part is what I like most about it. They worked out that studying roughly one cubic metre of lunar regolith, using modern microscopy, tomography, spectroscopy and AI-assisted image analysis, would already be enough to start setting limits on how many technological civilisations the galaxy has had.

To be clear, nobody has found anything. The paper is a preprint under review at the International Journal of Astrobiology, and it's a method, not a discovery. But it turns a scoop of grey dirt into a possible archive, and I'd really like someone to go and check.
