A tank of xenon a mile underground saw one event nobody can explain
Deep under South Dakota, in an old gold mine, there is a tank with about 10 tonnes of ultrapure liquid xenon in it. It sits nearly a mile down, so the rock overhead blocks the constant rain of particles coming from space. The experiment is called LZ, short for LUX-ZEPLIN, and its whole job is to sit there in the dark and wait for a dark matter particle to bump into a xenon atom.
Earlier this month the LZ team said they had one candidate. A single event, right in the part of the data where a WIMP should show up, and in a spot where the known backgrounds are very low.
They are being careful about it, and they should be. The event comes in at 2.6 sigma, which means there is roughly a 0.5% chance it is just ordinary background doing something weird. Particle physics does not call anything a discovery until 5 sigma, which is about one in three and a half million. Nobody on the team is saying they found dark matter. They showed the result at a conference in Japan, sent the paper to Physical Review Letters, and the detector is still running.
The part I like is the setup. Most of the matter in the universe is supposed to be this stuff, and nobody has ever directly caught a piece of it. So people built a very quiet tank in a mine and watched it for years. Now there is one blip in the data that nobody can explain away, and the only way to find out what it means is to keep watching. More data will either build it up or make it go away.
