Pigeon racing

🕊️ Pigeon Racing

Pigeon racing is a competitive sport in which specially trained homing pigeons fly from a release point back to their home loft. The winner is usually the pigeon with the highest calculated speed over the race distance.

🏁 How does pigeon racing work?

• Breeding: Owners breed pigeons with good homing ability, health, and endurance.
• Training: Pigeons practise flying progressively longer distances to learn their way home.
• Release: Pigeons are transported to a designated starting point and released together.
• Timing: Electronic systems or other approved methods record each bird’s arrival.
• Winner: The bird with the highest average speed, adjusted for the race distance, wins.

💰 Can pigeon racing be a business?

Yes. Some enthusiasts earn money through:

• Selling trained racing pigeons and breeding stock.
• Breeding birds with proven racing pedigrees.
• Entering organized races with prizes, where permitted.

However, pigeon racing can involve substantial costs for housing, feed, veterinary care, training, and transportation. Prize money and bird prices are not guaranteed.

Important: Good nutrition, clean lofts, safe training, and veterinary care are essential for the birds’ welfare.
