The Riverbed of Lost Shadows
The residents of Green Park Complex always found the long, dry stone channel running beside the tree-lined path curious. It looked like the bed of an ancient creek, carefully lined with rugged grey boulders, yet no one in modern memory had ever seen a single drop of water flow through it. On bright, sunny afternoons, light dappled through the lush canopy, casting long, peaceful shadows across the pale dirt path.
Or at least, they appeared peaceful.
Ren knew better. Every Tuesday at precisely 3:15 PM, he walked down the pathway on his break from the archives office nearby. And every Tuesday, he noticed the subtle wrongness.
The shadows stretching across the path didn't quite match the branches above. When the autumn wind rustled the leaves, the canopy danced, but the patterns dappling the ground remained entirely static. Worse still were the rocks. On closer inspection, several of the dark stone slabs bore strange, chalky white splatters—marks that locals assumed were dried mineral deposits or bird droppings. Ren, however, had spent months tracking them: every night, the white marks shifted slightly, like constellations crawling slow miles across a stone universe.
One warm afternoon, Ren sat along the stone border. The apartment high-rise towered in the distance against the blue sky, its windows gleaming quietly. As he looked down at his own shadow stretching across the dirt, a faint sound echoed from the dry rock bed—not the gush of water, but the gentle slosh of something heavy and liquid moving just beneath the dry stones.
He leaned in closer. The sunlight hit a flat boulder at an angle, revealing a faint shimmer on the dry rock face. Beneath the surface layer of stone, transparent as glass, lay a deep, rushing river—not made of water, but of forgotten shadows.
Figures glided silently beneath the stone: shadows of ancient trees long cut down, silhouettes of lost keys and forgotten pets, and the shapes of people who had walked this path decades ago and left a small piece of their presence behind.
As Ren watched, hypnotized, his own shadow on the dirt path detached from his feet. It slid quietly toward the edge of the rock bed, dipping its dark hand into the invisible current.
"I wouldn't let it drink too much," a quiet voice spoke from behind him.
Ren turned to see an elderly woman standing on the gravel path holding a small metal watering can.
"If your shadow drinks from the Dry River, it gets heavy," she explained softly, stepping over to one of the white-marked boulders. "And once it gets too heavy to lift, it settles down into the stone forever."
She tipped her watering can, pouring clear water over the chalky white marks. Where the liquid touched, the white splatters flared with a soft luminescence, binding the restless shadows back beneath the rocks.
Ren quickly stepped back, tugging his shadow away from the edge. His shadow stretched reluctantly back to his heels, feeling strangely heavier than it had moments before.
"Who keeps the river dry?" Ren asked, staring at the peaceful park pathway that now felt immensely deep.
"The stones do," the woman smiled, turning to walk back toward the tree line. "They keep what we leave behind so the present doesn't drown in the past. Just make sure you keep moving when the sun is high."
Ren took one last look at the apartment complex rising over the green leaves, checked his wristwatch, and walked swiftly down the dirt path—making sure his shadow stayed two quick steps ahead of him.
