The River That Forgot
Every summer, the dry stone channel in the municipal park remained completely parched, a artificial stream bed built decades ago during an urban beautification project. The locals walked past it every morning without a second glance—a bed of dark, jagged rocks resting beneath a thick canopy of sunlit trees, paralleled by a quiet paved footway that vanished into the green.
Ren was one of those regular morning walkers. On an otherwise ordinary Tuesday, however, he paused at the edge of the stone bed.
The park was silent except for the faint rustle of leaves overhead, yet Ren heard the unmistakable sound of rushing, turbulent water. He looked down at the rocks. They were bone-dry. Moss clung to their shady crevices, and fallen leaves littered the dry earth between them. Yet, when he stretched out a hand over the rocky trench, a distinct, icy chill radiated upward, dampening his skin with invisible spray.
Compelled by curiosity, Ren stepped off the paved path and placed his right shoe onto one of the large grey boulders in the dry bed.
The moment his foot made contact, the park around him vanished into a blur of silver light.
He was still standing on the stones, but the dry channel was now filled with a torrent of luminous, dark water—flowing unnaturally silent despite its fierce velocity. Looking up, he saw the surrounding trees frozen in mid-sway, their leafy branches suspended in time. On the paved path beside him, the faint silhouette of another morning walker stood like a translucent statue, completely unaware.
Ren looked down at his feet. The water surged around his boots, but it did not wet them. Floating down the invisible current were not leaves or driftwood, but shimmering fragments of forgotten things: a lost brass key, the fleeting melody of a lullaby long unheard, a childhood memory of a summer storm, and tiny, glowing spheres of unexpressed thoughts.
He realized then that this was not a dry artificial creek bed at all. It was a river of lost moments—a hidden conduit flowing beneath the sensory veil of the city, collecting everything human memory allowed to slip away.
As he watched, a small, radiant orb washed up against the stone at his feet. Ren reached down and gently touched it. Instantly, he felt a wave of warmth—the forgotten laughter of his grandmother on a bright afternoon twenty years ago, a memory he hadn't held in decades.
He withdrew his hand, breathless.
Carefully, Ren stepped back onto the dirt and gravel of the park path. Instantly, the silver light dissolved. The ambient sounds of the city returned—distant traffic, chirping cicadas, and the rustle of real wind through the green leaves. Before him lay the dry, quiet stone bed, looking as ordinary and inert as it had every day before.
Ren smiled, tucked his hands into his pockets, and continued his walk along the sunlit path, knowing that whenever the weight of the present became too heavy, the quiet stream of forgotten light would be waiting right beneath the stones.
