WHO ARE YOU?
FRIDAY 09
“Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, ‘Who are you?’”
John 1:19 (NKJV)
READ: John 1:19–28
It is of utmost importance to know who you are and what you are called to do. The Bible says: “FOR IF THE TRUMPET MAKES AN UNCERTAIN SOUND, WHO WILL PREPARE FOR BATTLES?” (1 Corinthians 14:8)
There must be a distinction in your sound. If you are not distinct in your assignment, no one would know what
you are being piped or played (1 Corinthians 14:7).
What does this mean?
It means your assignment must be distinct for the people you are sent or assigned to know your mission and be
attracted to you.
The priests and Levites were sent to John by the Jews, when they saw him baptizing in the river Jordan, asking him, “Who are you?”
The question stemmed from the fact that they had been expectant, wanting to know the mind of God at the time. From the time of Malachi, to the time that John came on board to be baptizing, there had been silence from God for about four hundred years—they have not heard thus says the Lord for that long.
Thus, the curiosity was high, the people wanted to know who John was.
They wanted to know whether he was the Christ [the Messiah or the Anointed One], or the Elijah, or the Prophet (John 1:20–22).
They wanted to know why John was baptizing if he was not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet (John 1:25).
John clearly told them: “ I AM ‘THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS: “MAKE STRAIGHT THE WAY OF THE LORD”’” (John 1:23).
And John also replied them why he was baptizing the people, because they asked why he was doing it:
26 I BAPTIZE WITH WATER, BUT THERE STANDS ONE AMONG YOU WHOM YOU DO NOT KNOW. 27 IT IS HE WHO, COMING AFTER ME, IS PREFERRED BEFORE ME [ranked higher than I], WHOSE SANDAL STRAP I AM NOT WORTHY TO LOOSE" (John 1:26,27).
The point being made is that you have to know what you are assigned to do. If you are not clear with your assignment, the vision you claim to have been given by God, you tend to attract wrong people. People would want to know who you are and what you are assigned to do.
The people came to John the Baptist, they wanted to know his mission. What you are assigned to do should be made
clear and it should be distinct. John made it clear that he was not the Christ [the Anointed One or Messiah], nor the Elijah, nor the Prophet, but he was the voice of the one crying in the wilderness to make the way of the Lord straight, as said by the Prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 40:3; John 1:23).
You should endeavour to get this clear and right as you begin to pursue whatever the assignment you do believe you are given by God. If you failed to get it right, you may attract wrong set of people, recalcitrants, who would give
you a tough time in doing the work.
You will not suffer unnecessarily in the doing of the work you are assigned to do in Jesus’ name.
Peace.
Reflect:
• If someone asked you plainly, ‘Who are you?’ would your answer be your title and achievements, or your calling before God?
• Like John the Baptist, are you content to be a voice pointing to Jesus, or are you trying to be the main attraction?
