A day in the life : Day 680
There has been a lot of interest lately in small robots that can handle practical jobs rather than just perform impressive demonstrations. Companies are working on machines that can move items around warehouses, help with factory work and carry out repetitive tasks. I find this more interesting than robots doing tricks for a camera. If they can safely handle even a few boring jobs, that could make a real difference.
My own experience with moving things around today was less advanced. I decided to shift a chair from one corner of the room to another because I thought it would make the space easier to use. The chair itself was not heavy, but there was a small table in the way. I moved the table, shifted the chair and then realised the table looked better where the chair had been.
After moving both things around several times, I finally put everything back almost where it started.
At least I got a little exercise out of it.
The afternoon was warm, so I left the windows open for a while in the evening. There was a comfortable breeze, and the room felt fresher. I had a simple meal today and tried not to snack just because I was sitting around with nothing particular to do.
I also spent some time reading about how technology companies are trying to make robots understand their surroundings better. Giving a machine instructions is one thing. Getting it to recognise that a chair is blocking its path or that an object might fall is a much harder problem.
That is probably true of everyday life as well. A plan can look perfectly sensible until you actually try it.
The room is back to normal now, and I have decided to leave the furniture alone for a while. Tomorrow I might find something more useful to do than rearranging chairs.
For tonight, that is enough progress.
