RE: Loss of memory

in CCC • 5 days ago

It would be so sad to lose one’s memory, or to have no memory of who you are, what you did. You would be like an empty shell. You would not be a complete person.

Memories are curious things. As the lyrics of one song said – “Memories may be beautiful, but what’s too painful to remember, we simply choose to forget.’ For some reason this phrase in the song stuck with me since the day I heard it.

And it’s very true isn’t it. We like to only remember the pleasant stuff, the happy moments and we try to forget the unpleasant ones.

Unfortunately, we can’t pick and keep the ones we like, and delete the ones we do not like like some programs on a computer. We have to live with all our memories – the good and bad. They are the blueprints of our life.

I’m not sure if that’s quite how it works. I don’t think we can consciously choose to forget something, certainly not if it’s traumatic. These are experiences that hold a lesson and a warning, and you have to come to terms with them. It’s absolutely essential to come to terms with them. That can take a lifetime, because the soul knows no time. That said, I do think the text is lovely. I don’t believe I personally have that many lovely memories, certainly not of my past. The choice is not to dwell on this every moment of the day, but to move on; the choice is not to wallow in self-pity, but forgetting is something entirely different. This doesn’t mean, incidentally, that I can’t see lovely and enjoyable things – quite the opposite, in fact.

If those without a memory are like an empty Shell Insm not so sure of. You do not miss what you never had and new memories are built even if they do not remain. Besides ... instinct is also kind of memory.

Yes, you are right. That is not how memory works. One can’t just forget the bad memories and keep the good ones. Like it or not, memories good and bad will keep flooding in, sometimes when we least expect them. We can’t shut them out, we can’t forget them.

Like you said, we shouldn’t dwell on them. We should just accept them. They are a part of our past, a part of who we are. Accept them for what they are and move on.

I understand what you mean by living without a memory. I wouldn’t want to be like that. I like myself for who I am – with memories, good and bad intact.

Life experiences are part of who we are., the bad ones included.
