Beyond the Glass // Lovecraft

Here I am, in front of the microphone, inside my isolation headphones; I hear nothing but the hum and my own breathing. Today I want to talk about cosmic horror that literary and philosophical movement that helps us truly grasp how insignificant we are in our current universe. Cosmic horror isn't about a monster hiding under your bed or a ghost you have to flee from.

No. That is a banal fear, stemming from the fact that human beings are merely human. Cosmic horror is the cold epiphany that the universe was not built for us, and that the forces of nature operate beyond good and evil indifferent to our existence, our dreams, and our morality.

It is the feeling Howard Phillips Lovecraft defined as the suspension of the laws of nature an incomprehensibility beyond human understanding. It is the belief that there are beings hidden somewhere in the bowels of interstellar space or perhaps in the deepest, bottomless ocean abysses—whose existence, compared to our entire history, would last no longer than a single breath.

The rational mind crumbles before such sheer magnitude. And madness is not a punishment from God; it is simply the human mind reacting to thoughts the body cannot comprehend.

As I looked through the glass of this recording booth, I sometimes imagined something out there beyond the city lights, drifting in the interstellar void with eyes fixed upon us. It pays us no malicious attention; it wouldn't even bother to acknowledge our existence much like the way we indifferently observe a speck of dust under a microscope.

That is the nature of this terror. There is no salvation, no heroes. Only the vastness of space.

So, I ask you to close your eyes for a few seconds and let yourselves be carried away by that sensation. Perhaps in this way, the next time you look up at the sky, you will understand that we are not alone and that, in reality, this might not be a bad thing.
