The mechanical lung wheezed again. Click-hiss. Click-hiss.

My empty nine-millimeter felt like a useless brick in my hand. The air in the observation deck dropped ten degrees, carrying the sterile, chemical stench of formaldehyde mixed with the metallic tang of old blood.

I pressed my back against the cold steel of the main console. The fluorescent lights overhead flickered, buzzing violently before half the bank blew out, plunging the far corner back into absolute darkness.

Click-hiss.

It was closer. Ten feet away.

I held my breath, slowly drawing the tactical combat knife from my chest rig. The polished blade caught a sliver of light from the surviving security monitors. In the reflection, I saw it.

It wasn't a monster. It was a Pan-Asia archivist. Or at least, it used to be.

The man was suspended from the ceiling by a thick bundle of optic cables grafted directly into his severed spine. His lower jaw was completely gone, replaced by a corrugated breathing tube that pumped pink, bioluminescent fluid into an exposed mechanical lung in his hollowed-out chest. He didn't have eyes—just smooth, pale skin stretched tight over the upper half of his face, embedded with a barcode.

He was a living server rack. A biological hard drive left down here to record the nightmare.

Suddenly, the archivist’s head snapped toward my hiding spot. The barcode on his face flared neon red.

"Unauthorized biometric signature," a synthesized voice grated from the speakers above. "Sector 0 is compromised. Initiating purge."

The cables attached to his spine whipped forward like mechanized serpents. I dove sideways as a jagged metal connector smashed through the console where my head had just been. Sparks showered the deck. The impact shattered the central monitor—the one showing the doppelganger with the golden teeth.

As the glass spider-webbed, the remaining screens surrounding the room violently switched feeds. The live video of the slum vanished, replaced by a cascading wall of Pan-Asia confidential files.

My eyes scanned the scrolling text as I scrambled behind a row of server towers.

[PROJECT HELL'S EYE - VESSEL ITERATION 48]
[STATUS: INCUBATION COMPLETE]
[OVERRIDE: THE ORGANISM HAS BREACHED FIREWALL. IT IS DOWNLOADING INTO THE CLONE SHELL.]

My stomach turned to ice. The terrifying smile on the monitor, the golden teeth… The ancient organism wasn't just feeding on us. It was studying our genetics, waiting for a clone strong enough to handle its psychic load. It didn't just want to wake up. It wanted a human body to walk on the surface.

And I had just let the perfect, empty vessel out into the open.

The archivist lunged again. His mechanical lung screamed as he swung a massive, cybernetic arm. I ducked, sliding across the blood-slicked grating. I didn't try to stab his armored chassis. Instead, I drove my combat knife straight into the bundle of optic cables suspending him from the ceiling.

Black coolant sprayed like a severed artery. The archivist seized, his limbs thrashing wildly as the power feed abruptly severed. He collapsed onto the metal floor, the mechanical lung stuttering to a violent halt.

Silence crashed back into the room, broken only by the dripping coolant.

I didn't waste a second. I crawled over to his twitching body, grabbed his severed spinal cable, and jammed the connector directly into the maintenance port of the main console.

The screens flashed green.

[ACCESS GRANTED. SECONDARY ESCAPE HATCH UNLOCKED.]

A sudden vibration shuddered through the floor plates. Clang. Right under the main console, some rusted-out access panel gave way, grinding as it slid. Below it? Nothing but dead, empty black. Except for an iron ladder. Bolted straight to the wall, heading straight up.

I didn't exactly have options. That airlock was toast—deadlocked from the outside. And that... thing wearing my face? It was already melting through the titanium frame with acid.

Boots first, I shimmied into the claustrophobic gap. Rungs bit through my gloves like solid ice. I snagged a loose data-pad off the nearest server rack and jammed it into my rig. Without a map, I was basically a dead man walking.

Into the dark I went. Ten rungs. Twenty. Lungs burning as the air turned into thin ice. Hit fifty feet and had to wedge my shoulder against the freezing shaft just to breathe. Yanked the data cable, shoved it into my wrist-port.

The holo-grid spit out a sickly, flickering blue light. This shaft wasn't just a maintenance tunnel. It punched a hole miles deep, straight through solid bedrock. Destination marker blinked: Sector 1 - The Nerve Stem.

Then my heart just stopped.

Proximity sensor went off. A single, pulsing red blip. Inside this exact shaft. Maybe sixty feet below me. And it was hauling ass upward.

I ripped the flashlight off my vest, pointing it straight down the drop. My hand wouldn't stop shaking. The beam sliced the dark, hitting the rusted iron below.

Something whipped out of the shadows. Grabbed the metal.

It was my glove. My own frayed Kevlar, still smoking from where the acid hit. But what was inside the glove... God, the flesh was wrong. Fingers splitting right down the middle, stretching out into pale, multi-jointed spider legs. Tipped with these sick, razor-sharp bone hooks.

A laugh echoed up the metal tube. Wet, laced with static. It was my own voice, sounding like it was choking on thick golden mud.

"Found you."

If the hidden control room can be accessed that easily, it is strange the programmed security archivist says there's an intruder. 🤔

I still wonder about why bodies are reused or more the skin and as I assume a part of the former working attitude. Up at the ceiling for sure the body-cam has a good overview 🤣

Now we know where the name body cam is related to (a body ussedvas a cam).

Sounds the nanobots are needed again, those Old Cheng used, to fix some hands.
How about a new eye?

Your literal definition of a 'body cam' is brilliantly dark and absolutely perfect for this cyberpunk nightmare! 😂 I love it so much that I might just have to steal that concept for future chapters.

As for the 'easy' access to the control room and the archivist's warning... let's just say sometimes the system lets you in precisely because you are the expected 'intruder'. It's not a bug, it's a trap.

And regarding the nanobots and a new eye—at this point, they definitely need a full hardware upgrade to survive what's coming next! Thanks again for the amazing breakdown! 🦾👁️
