Chapter 17: Phantom Echoes and the Clockwork Hound
The Phantom Nerve and a Promise in the Dark
We move. Now." I gritted my teeth, pulling myself up by the rusted rebar of the subway pillar. The left side of my face was completely numb from Old Chen’s synthetic coagulant, but deep inside my skull, a phantom itch remained.
We sprinted through the flooded utility tunnels, leaving the smoldering Bronze Corps armors behind. Pan-Asia was a monolithic beast, and we had just poked it in the eye. They wouldn't send standard grunts anymore; they would send the exterminators.
As we splashed through the toxic runoff, a sudden, blinding headache hit me. The pitch-black void of my dead left eye flickered. It wasn't light. It was a digital afterimage. A crimson tactical grid suddenly overlaid my remaining human vision.
"Stop!" I barked, grabbing Lu Yan’s metallic shoulder and shoving her against the damp brick wall.
A fraction of a second later, a high-caliber plasma beam melted the exact spot where she had just been standing, turning the concrete into glowing orange slag.
"How did you know?" Chen yelled over the hiss of melting stone, raising his shotgun.
I pressed a hand to my bandaged eye, breathing heavily. "The Suit's Trojan... when Chen severed the nerve, the neural overload must have fused a fragment of the Suit's code into my synapses. Like an organ transplant recipient inheriting the donor's habits. I can feel his tactical routing."
I wasn't just Yun Feng anymore. A tiny, frozen sliver of the Suit’s absolute, ruthless logic was now trapped in my brain. It was sickening, but it was giving us an edge.
"They're coming from the upper grating!" I yelled, my hijacked instincts predicting the enemy's flanking maneuver.
"Let them come!" Lu Yan roared. The hydraulic pistons in her legs fired, launching her into the air. She intercepted a descending Pan-Asia assassin mid-air—a heavily augmented cyborg with four mechanical spider-limbs extending from his spine. Pure, soulless corporate hardware. With a brutal swing of her chrome arm, Lu Yan crushed the assassin's cranial plating, sending him crashing into the toxic water.
But there was no time to celebrate. A low, terrifying growl echoed through the tunnel.
From the shadows emerged a 'Clockwork Hound'—a biological wolf heavily mutated and grafted onto a heavily armored tank tread system. It was Pan-Asia’s most vile creation: twisting living, feeling creatures into obedient, agonizing weapons of mass destruction. Its jaw unhinged, revealing rows of vibrating laser-cutters instead of teeth.
"Target acquired. Eradicate," the Hound broadcasted, its voice a synthesized nightmare of corporate commands.
"Chen, the underbelly! It's the only unarmored spot!" I shouted, firing three armor-piercing rounds from my heavy revolver. The bullets sparked harmlessly off the Hound's titanium skull, but it successfully drew its attention.
The mechanical beast lunged at me. The sheer force of its leap knocked the revolver from my hand. Just as its laser-cutter jaws snapped down toward my throat, Chen slid underneath it through the muddy water, jamming the barrel of his shotgun directly into the Hound's exposed biological chest.
BOOM!
The point-blank blast tore the beast in half. Sparks and synthetic white blood rained down on us. The tunnel fell eerily silent, save for our heavy panting and the dripping water.
We had survived, but the line was drawn clearer than ever. Pan-Asia wasn't just a corporation; it was a cancer that mutilated humans and animals alike for absolute control. And we were the only ones standing between them and the millions of innocent people sleeping in the slums above us.
"Good shooting, old man," I coughed, retrieving my gun.
"Don't flatter me, kid," Chen grunted, reloading his smoking barrel. "We need to get to my armory. If we are assaulting the Pan-Asia spire, we need heavy ordnance."
Suddenly, the severed head of the Clockwork Hound twitched. Its glowing red mechanical eyes flickered back to life, locking onto me. The jaw clicked open, but the voice that came out wasn't the synthesized machine.
It was him. The Suit.
"A fascinating adaptation, Detective," the Suit's cold, arrogant voice echoed from the dead machine. "You survived the neural purge. But did you really think I would broadcast the overwrite protocol tomorrow?"
Lu Yan’s holographic wrist-projector automatically flared to life. The 24-hour countdown we had discovered earlier suddenly glitched, numbers spinning wildly before stopping on a terrifying new figure.
01:59:59.
"I am initiating the purge in two hours, Yun Feng," the Suit’s voice chuckled through the static. "Millions of minds wiped clean before sunrise. You can either run, or you can come to the top floor of the Spire and watch your city die. See you soon."
The Hound's eyes went dark, emitting a final puff of smoke.
Two hours. My phantom eye throbbed with a cold, digital fury. I looked at Lu Yan and Old Chen. There was no fear in their eyes, only absolute resolve.
"Change of plans," I said, checking my revolver's cylinder one last time. "We're not sneaking in. We're blowing the front door right off its hinges.

For starters, my PC has broken down. Constant power outages and electrical noise don't help protect the equipment. I am currently trying to revive my small, noisy contraption. My path is a narrow one, making it increasingly difficult for me to participate in the community. My health isn't the best these days, either. Since yesterday, the telephone network and mobile data have been down; only the Wi-Fi connection is barely hanging on.
I could write "Dear Diary."
It would make for a good story.
I don't want the Three Wise Men to turn out to be my parents—that would make it all a lie. Day Two. Dear Diary. The neighbor's dog has been kidnapped.
Dear diary. I was born on a day when God was sick.
The possibilities would be endless. I strive to elevate my culture and my art.
Your novel is both visual and literary art. In a tough genre, imagination is more than just a gift; it is essential to this type of storytelling. Narrating the unknown, captivating an audience, and maintaining a steady emotional and literary level throughout the story is one of literature's greatest challenges. Writing while keeping that rhythm—without visible seams or uneven patches—is complex. Yet, your voice and style are unmistakable. Your characters evolve—their psyches and their fading humanity—and yet they suffer. They carry fear and hope like a stigma that is both flesh and a sign of surrender. I hope to keep encountering your work—your craftsmanship. Success on your journey, and remember: don't give up on art.
I will return whenever my circumstances allow.
I leave you in the best of hands.

Get to bed, while the story evolves and try to save your energy. If you ask me God was ill the entire month, not just the day you were born.
The story will be there, the pelicans might, the rest is a mystery, potatoes, tomatoes and cats and dogs included.
We can hibernate and wake up after the big bang, change or... And if not, there's nothing lost.
Dear @almaguer, I am deeply moved by your poetic and profound words. To read such a beautiful analysis of my characters' fading humanity and struggles, especially while you are going through your own severe hardships, means more to me than I can express. Your artistic soul shines brightly even through the screen.
Please listen to @wakeupkitty—health and rest must come first. Art can wait. Actually, I am also stepping away from the keyboard for a couple of days to celebrate my little grandson's 3rd birthday this weekend. The cyberpunk world of Hell's Eye will pause, and it will be right here waiting for both of us when we return.
Please take good care of yourself, recover your energy, and I look forward to seeing you again when the storms pass. Sending you my warmest regards!
I will pass the message. He is still ill. On Cuba it is nearly impossible to lay hands on medication. They still have diseases we no longer have. And too much mosquitoes. The people do not even earn 3 dollars a month, paid in CUP. A currency they are not able to exchange for any other currency.
They still receive a booklet with coupons to pick up a small piece of a hard bun, some sugar, rice (what to do with rice if you have no electricity, no water, are not allowed to make a fire?).
I hope he can paint again since he runs out of materials, which are hard to find on the island not to mention the fact the restrictions on sending fluids over. There are some other possibilities but you have to be rich to be able to use them and if course, the USA is needed to do the shipping.
He recently posted something.

Reading this truly breaks my heart, @wakeupkitty. It’s hard to imagine enduring such extreme hardships, lacking even the most basic needs like water, electricity, and medication. Please do pass on my sincerest well wishes to him. I truly hope he recovers soon and finds a way to get the materials he needs. Art is such a powerful light in the dark, and it is devastating to hear that his creative outlet is restricted by these circumstances. Thank you for sharing his reality with us and for caring so deeply about him.
Reading what you wrote reminded me of another time. I was happily reading Noticias del Imperio by Fernando del Paso—you know him, a master among masters. I think everyone should read it.
My children and family are my strength, but I couldn't fail to mention you and Kitty. Coming back here means returning to a space of art and reconnection; I always find the energy to create when you are around.
It saddens me to see the news coming from your beautiful country. The tentacles of empire are spreading everywhere, rotting everything they touch.
I hope all your loved ones are well; they are family to me.
This BOOMING vote is yours and well deserved!

It’s nice to hear from you. Are you still away for the time being because of the festive season? I hope you had a brilliant birthday.
The month is almost over, so in that sense our work is coming to an end too, and then of course we’ll have to wait and see how things pan out.
I’d say: welcome back, and I’d be happy to be your co-author – or rather, your critical reader who offers feedback. 🤣🤣🤣
By the way, I ended up on this platform with another writer, and we’re taking turns writing a story. Ah well, the good old days.

Thank you so much for the warm wishes, @wakeupkitty! I was indeed a bit busy recently with the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival and celebrating my grandson's 3rd birthday. In fact, I am preparing a post with some happy photos from his birthday party to share with the community soon!
I am absolutely thrilled and honored by your offer to be my "critical reader"! Having your feedback is a huge encouragement for my cyberpunk writing. It's also fascinating to hear about your early days on this platform co-authoring a story. That sounds like a truly wonderful memory. Thank you for all your hard work this month as your team's term wraps up. Please get some good rest!

Before I continue reading your latest posts, I will first check all the comments you write and answer them.
If you ask me I am still behind.
Rest???
I could ask: What is that?
Or say: I try... 🤣🤣🤣
I try to clean up, sorted (partly) out my things, sent two boxes to Hungary (such a stressful day it was, hopefully no leaking paint and melting cheese 🤐) and dug around a bit in the garden after picking tomatoes. I should finish it before I leave.
And... INKtober is on its way. I intend to join with 5-10 minutes art + writing (to keep the spirit high).
My co-writer and I already wrote together on a different platform. It took us a long time to figure out what to do. He left and went back, I stayed.

Wow, sending boxes to Hungary, gardening, picking tomatoes, and preparing for INKtober... You really have a packed schedule, @wakeupkitty! I cross my fingers that your paint and cheese survive the journey safely. 😂
It's amazing that you stayed and kept writing when your co-writer left. Your persistence is truly inspiring. I'm really looking forward to seeing your 5-10 minutes of art and writing for INKtober. Please don't forget to catch your breath amidst all the busy work!
