RE: INKtober 2026 - The Cookie Thieves
Hunger can push people to do cruel things, which makes this feel less like a fairy tale and more like a painful choice with no easy answer.
And it leaves you wondering what happens to children who've done something terrible when no one wants to take them back.
I think that if you lived in England back then, you’d be put on a ship because the prisons were full, and eventually you’d be sent to Australia. England did this to get rid of what they called ‘criminals’.
These days they’re a lot less choosy; alas, I read yesterday that they’re now planning to send in immigrants – whether they’re fleeing or not – who are certainly not exactly the cream of the crop; well, that’s just the last straw.
Hopefully those people will be able to build a life for themselves, because say what you will, the ancestors of Western Australians were, at any rate, intelligent and less warlike than the ancestors of the Americans.
Oh well, and if you’re from other countries, they’ll just chop your hand off or hang you.
In principle, I’m not in favour of theft, nor of rioting or destroying other people’s property. And believe me, I’ve gone through a lot of hunger in my life, ever since I was a baby and later on too, including hair loss and everything. I know what hunger feels like, and I also know what happens when you’ve always been hungry – what it does to your body.
And then, of course, there’s the matter of how to live with the fact that you’re a murderer. I personally think even Hansel and Gretel had a choice – they certainly didn’t have to kill that witch at all. In this fairy tale, it’s actually justified, just as it’s written in the Bible: ‘an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth’. Which means you don’t have to be nice to your neighbour at all, nor do you have to love them.
If everyone were to act on this principle – an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth – the world would look very different indeed. Nor do I think the word ‘discrimination’ would carry much weight then. Rather, it would be the law of the strongest – and, who knows, perhaps the cleverest. But the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel actually proves that point as well.
