RE: INKtober 2026 - Contraption - There Number One

Du, Knete kostet 0.30 euro bei AliExpress u. bei uns gibt es auch Angebote. Einfach etwas mehr einkaufen. Dus hasst aber recht, alles is ungeheuer teurer. Unnötig.

Perhaps I’m being too fastidious, but there are certain things I wouldn’t buy without holding them in my hands first—this applies to sculpting clay or other art supplies that I’ll actually be using; I wouldn’t want them to turn out to be something that ends up annoying me while I work. :)

The last time I bought sculpting clay was for my daughters back when they were in school. I remember being surprised that a one-kilogram block cost about 10–12 dollars at a specialty store.

I just did a quick Google search to see what it costs now—the price has dropped a bit, to about 6–8 dollars per kilogram. But a kilogram really isn’t much; I recall that when I was about 12, I sculpted Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, and it took about eight kilograms of clay.

Back then—forty years ago—it was actually quite difficult to find proper sculpting clay, so I used to melt down various colored modeling clays in a double boiler to create a uniform, single-colored mass.

As for the modeling clay sold for children’s art classes, it often feels more like foam rubber or a synthetic sponge than actual wax-based modeling clay. :)

Thank you so much!

With us on average small packages of 250 grams clay are sold (1.45 euro up to 2.50), no need to bake it.

During my childhood we simply dug it out of the soil.
At primary school they had black, yellow and white clay + an oven.
We learned (and also later on) to to take out the clay in the middle. It keeps the result lighter and saves clay. These days we use plastic bottles. Building out of rings is also a possibility.

I don't care about the materials. A potato Peel knife works as good as a spoon, scissors or whatever I have at hands (fingers 🤣).

Yes, I don’t disagree—the most important thing is the desire to create, rather than having the "right" materials. That said, working with clay requires a certain skill, and I’ve never been very good at crafting delicate, refined details with it; I actually prefer modeling clay for that kind of work. Still, if the opportunity ever arises, I’d love to set up a potter’s wheel, build a kiln, and try my hand at being a potter! :)
Thank you so much!

I would love to a potter's wheel too... Plus the oven!

Viewed from this perspective, it could easily evolve from a hobby into a business—provided, of course, that you manage to produce quality work :)

If I can afford that, I do not need the business. I will sit surrounded by my pottery, drink tea and be happy 😁
