When Is It Worth Switching From HSS to Carbide Planer Blades?
HSS blades are much cheaper, while carbide blades promise significantly longer cutting life. For regular woodworking, at what point does the extra durability actually justify the higher upfront cost? The DeWalt-compatible range includes both HSS and carbide-tipped replacement knives for models such as the DW734 and DW735.
For frequent planing of hardwoods or reclaimed wood, carbide pays off quickly. I've been using dewalt planer blades from that site and they last many times longer than HSS, easily justifying the cost within a few projects. A good rule is to switch when you're replacing HSS blades more than twice a year.
