Hell's Eye Chapter 40

"Found you."

The voice crawled up the freezing iron shaft like physical slime, laced with that wet, choking static. Panic spiked my adrenaline, overriding the burning fatigue in my muscles. I slammed my boots onto the next rung, scrambling upward so fast my joints popped. Below me, the metallic clack-clack-clack of those bone-hooked spider fingers striking iron accelerated. It was climbing twice as fast as I could.

I dared to glance down. The mutated clone—wearing my face—was looking up, its jaw unhinged and leaking a luminescent golden fluid that hissed against the metal walls. I didn't think. I ripped the heavy, depleted nine-millimeter pistol from my tactical holster and hurled it straight down into the absolute black.

A sickening crunch echoed as the solid steel grip smashed directly into its upturned face. The thing shrieked—a horrific noise like grinding gears tearing through wet flesh—and lost its grip. It plummeted back into the void, swallowed by the dark.

I didn't wait to hear the thud. I kept climbing, my lungs drawing in air that felt like inhaled glass, until my gloves finally hit a heavy, circular hatch. The titanium surface was freezing, covered in a thick layer of industrial frost. I bypassed the rusted manual lock by jamming the dead archivist's data cable directly into the override port.

With a violent hiss of depressurization, the hatch blew open. I dragged myself over the edge, collapsing onto a steel grating.

When I finally caught my breath and looked up, the sheer scale of the place stole the air right back from my lungs.

This was Sector 1: The Nerve Stem. It wasn't a laboratory. It was a cathedral of biomechanical blasphemy. Massive, fossilized ribs—each the size of a skyscraper—arched overhead, forming a colossal dome. But the ancient bone was interwoven with millions of pulsing fiber-optic cables, pumping thick, glowing blue data-fluid like veins. The air here didn't smell like decay; it smelled of sharp ozone, deep-sea salt, and something impossibly ancient. Something that had been sleeping for eons.

At the center of this ribbed cavern sat a monolithic console, hovering over a seemingly bottomless chasm. I limped toward it, the grating echoing under my boots in the terrifying silence. The terminal was powered on. Its interface was utterly alien—organic shapes shifting on the monitors—yet the top corner still displayed Pan-Asia's corporate logo.

I connected my wrist-port. The data-pad immediately began decrypting the localized files.

[WARNING: NEURAL-CLOUD SYNTHESIS INCOMPLETE.]
[SUBJECT ORIGIN: DEEP TRENCH EXCAVATION SITE ALPHA.]

My eyes scanned the cascading logs, and my blood ran cold. Pan-Asia hadn't discovered a monster down here. They had discovered a dormant, telepathic fungal network. A literal biological internet that predated humanity by millions of years. They weren't trying to contain it; they were trying to upload human consciousness into it to create the ultimate quantum computer. The clones down here weren't just experimental vessels. They were meant to be organic routers.

Suddenly, a shadow fell over the console.

I spun around, drawing my tactical knife, my muscles coiled to strike.

Nothing. Just the low hum of the servers and the blue pulse of the fiber-optics.

But out of the corner of my eye, I caught the reflection on a dead monitor to my right. It wasn't right.

I slowly turned my head, looking closely at the dark, glossy surface of the screen. I saw my own face staring back. Bruised, exhausted, smeared with black grease and dried blood.

But when I blinked... my reflection didn't.

My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs. In the dark glass, the reflection slowly tilted its head. The corners of its mouth stretched upward into an impossible, terrifying smile, revealing a mouthful of jagged, golden teeth.

Before I could back away, a line of text abruptly blinked across the bottom of the unpowered screen, rendering directly from the reflection's side of the glass:

[UPLOAD COMPLETE. SYNAPSE CONNECTION ESTABLISHED. THANK YOU FOR DELIVERING THE HOST BODY.]

I think we’re stuck in a loop – or at least the clones are stuck in it – and they destroy themselves only to get back up again straight away. They all share the same nasty trait, which means our protagonist has it too, even if he might not be aware of it. In any case, he gets plenty of exercise fighting that writhing ivy back and forth. It’s also interesting that he can see something from his higher self – the average person certainly can’t. How many downloads or uploads have taken place by now?

I recently came across another article stating that human beings are being used to control computers; this time, someone had also asked Grok (AI on x.com, but also active on Steemit if you give the command and add the name of the AI of your choice) whether this was true. Amazingly enough, this time it wasn’t dismissed as fake news or a conspiracy theory.

我最近又看到一篇文章,称人类正在被用来控制计算机,这次还有人向Grok(x.com上的AI,但如果你下达指令并添加你选择的AI名称,它在Steemit上也活跃)询问过这是否属实。

Wow you always see right through my plot! Yeah the clones are just stuck in this sick loop... die and wake up again. And your right about the main guy, he got that same dark trait inside him too, he just don't want to admit it yet lol. How many uploads? Man, maybe thousands already...

And that Grok article you read is so crazy! Actually that kind of real news is what give me the idea for this chapter. Human brains used like computer parts... it is so scary that AI don't even say it is fake news now. I guess reality is getting more cyberpunk than my story haha. Have a great day!
