Chapter 34: The Belly of the Beast
📖 Previous Chapter / 上一章: The Graveyard of Mirrors第三十三章:镜像坟场
I kicked blindly. Combat boot connected with bone. A wet crack, and the hydraulic grip on my ankle snapped loose.
I swung the maglight down, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.
It was me. Of course it was. But mangled. His chest was completely ripped open, the tactical rig shredded to nylon ribbons. But there were no human ribs inside. Just a chaotic mess of Pan-Asia cybernetics choked by a pulsing, pale-green bioluminescent fungus. The roots were literally digging into his synthetic lungs, glowing in time with his ragged breathing.
Clone 47. Still bleeding. Still alive. Barely.
"What gate?" I grabbed his collar, pulling his face toward the light. "Who opened it?"
He coughed. A mixture of fresh blood and black motor oil spattered my visor. His eyes were completely white, rolled back in his head. "The Old Flesh... it needed a network. We are the copper wire, forty-eight."
His trembling hand reached up. Fingers dug violently into the back of his own neck. A sickening crunch of breaking cartilage. He ripped a bio-data shard straight out of his own neural port. It dripped with spinal fluid and grease. He shoved it into my palm.
"Run. Get off the board."
His head rolled to the side. The green glow in his chest flickered and died.
Before I could even process the data shard in my hand, the floor started vibrating.
A low, sub-bass hum rattled my teeth. I stood up, sweeping the maglight across the depot. The circuit board of mummified clones. They were shaking. The dried husks vibrating violently against the metal grating. Sickly green light started crawling along the geometric lines carved into the floor, linking the bodies together. The array was booting up.
I shoved the bloody shard into my pouch. I didn't wait to see what they were summoning.
I sprinted for the pitch-black monorail tunnel. The only exit. The humming behind me rapidly built into a deafening, overlapping mechanical scream.
I vaulted over the rusted edge of the transit platform, landing hard on the ballast stones between the massive steel tracks. The air in the tunnel was freezing, smelling of ancient rust and stagnant water. I kept moving. Deep into the throat of the dark, putting as much distance between me and that nightmare as possible.
Ten minutes of blind jogging. Lungs burning. The screaming from the depot faded into distant, heavy echoes.
Then, my flashlight beam caught something reflective.
An old Pan-Asia maintenance tram parked on a siding. Rusted to hell. But the heavy metal doors had been forced open from the outside. The edges were curled inward, marked by massive, parallel claw grooves.
I climbed inside, boots crunching on broken glass. I shut my flashlight off for a second just to catch my breath in the dark.
That's when I smelled it.
Under the overwhelming stench of rust and burnt ozone. A faint, unmistakable trace of synthetic lilac.
Lu Yan’s perfume. Fresh.
I fumbled in the dark, hitting the tram’s manual console. I ripped the bloody data shard from my pouch and jammed it into the auxiliary port.
The console shrieked. Sparks showered over my gloves. Then, a flickering amber screen booted up.
It wasn't a text log. It was a live structural map.
Except it wasn't a blueprint of an underground facility. The "tunnels" on the screen were organic. Expanding and contracting rhythmically. Arteries. The massive depot I had just escaped was labeled simply: Digestion Chamber 4.
At the bottom of the screen, a red warning flashed frantically.
[ERROR: PROTOCOL OVERRIDDEN. THE HOST IS AWAKE.]
And then, right outside the thin metal walls of the tram, something massive took a very slow, very wet breath.

How can something breathe in wet air? Or is it just letting out a big fart? So number 48 has now also become number 47 because it’s got an extra option? It seems downright disgusting to me to be part of intestinal system 4, hahaha. But I still maintain that improving 47 could work, because it’s more in line with the numbering than number 48, and earlier versions are probably the same. In any case, it was really exciting. I’m looking forward to the next episode. Don’t forget to go to bed! That’s what I’m going to do now, too.
Haha! 'Letting out a big fart'?! You completely ruined my terrifying horror atmosphere! 🤣🤣 Now every time I picture the massive beast in the dark, I am going to laugh instead of being scared!
I am so glad you found Digestion Chamber 4 'disgusting'—that is the highest compliment an author can receive for a biomechanical horror scene! And you might be right about 47... maybe he was the strongest version all along, giving 48 the only chance to survive.
I am thrilled you found it exciting. Thank you for the wonderful comments and the Chinese translations. Good night, have a great sleep! ☕❤️
I guess, soon the party is over. I will have more time to read and who knows I even leave comments, unless I sink into the comfort of the waterbed or... couch...
This vote is yours and deserved! Let's read, comment and connect.
❤️🍀
Hi @wakeupkitty! Yes, I did see your incredible drawing! 🎨 It was amazing, and we already had a fun chat about how my cyberpunk stories might be 'poisoning' your artistic inspiration with time machines and human brains! 😂
I am SO excited that your 'party' is wrapping up soon, but please do enjoy the comfort of your waterbed and couch—you have absolutely earned it! Thank you so much for reading and always being the best supporter in the Abyss.
And a HUGE thank you for the @booming03 nomination! 🚀 Seeing your name on that Boom poster always makes my day. You are the real hero making these miracles happen. Go rest up, and get ready for the next crazy chapter! ❤️🍵"

I am so sorry to hear that you were treated that way today. No one deserves to be yelled at or shown such disrespect, especially someone like you who dedicates so much time and energy to helping others grow. It is completely understandable that you feel relieved this term is ending!
Please take all the time you need to rest. Doing 'something different' or 'nothing at all' sounds exactly like what you need right now. You have given so much to this community, and now it is time to prioritize your own peace and happiness.
Stay warm, don't rush the packing if you don't feel like it, and know that your kind heart is always appreciated by those who truly understand you. Sending you a big, warm hug! 🫂❤️

As this is the first and last time I’ve written a report for this team, I spent nine hours yesterday sorting out a few bits and pieces. One person in particular has a bit of a habit of talking out of turn when it comes to honesty. Apparently, the same rule applies here: the little people have to stick to all the rules, whilst she is exempt. Now, I’m under no illusion that the text will be understood, let alone that they’ll take a good look at themselves. You’d need a bit more intellect for that, but their ‘greatness’ is based on cronyism and the way scams work.
I find it appalling to see how poorly written this is. The fact that the full stop at the end of a sentence comes straight after a word is apparently already very difficult. And someone like that is a teacher? I don’t know what subject they teach, but my children, at the age of seven, would already have torn such a teacher to shreds. Imagine having a teacher like that. In that respect, my father is right: teachers have a certain (character) trait – or is it behaviour? – where they look down on everyone else.
In any case, I did a drawing late last night with my eyes half-closed and managed to keep them that way – completely wrong, then, but I’m up to speed.
And now it’s winter time. Another one of those daft expressions, ‘winter time’ – it’s actually just standard time, plus 20 minutes forward. I don’t think I actually feel like I’ve managed to sleep an extra hour. Hahaha, have a lovely day!
I think I’ll just paint on a piece of cardboard tomorrow, as I’ve still been meaning to give that a go. Not that I’ve never done it before, but I want to see if it’s possible to make it look less ‘runny’ than what @jompiy says paintings on cardboard look like. I’ve also got a mountain of frames to fill, and there’s still an unfinished oil painting on the easel. And… my rice paper has arrived. It took ages to get the postbox open, though. Those stupid touch-sensitive buttons wouldn’t work with my fingers. Nothing new there, either. Just like automatic doors and lift doors that close whilst I’m standing in them.
A valuable lesson: never hold a lift door open for anyone. 🤣
A lovely day with bugs, Feng, iron doors and coffee.
🍀❤️

Oh man, 9 hours for one report? You really need a good rest! That 'teacher' person sounds so annoying... acting like they are above all rules. I mean, my english is not perfect but at least I know how to use a full stop right! 😂 Your dad is totally right about some people. Don't let her ruin your mood.
And winter time is a joke lol. I never feel that extra hour too. It's just a lie.
Those touch buttons are the worst! Sometimes they just act like my fingers are dead or something. I hate them so much. Anyway, really looking forward to see your cardboard painting! Take it easy today, drink your coffee and relax a bit. ☕🐈⬛
