📖 Previous Chapter / 上一章: The Biometric Gate and the Duplicate Face

[8, 7, 6...]

The cold countdown hammered against my brainstem like a sledgehammer. With every ticking number, my past memories—the rainy nights at the orphanage, Grandpa's face, the pungent reek of motor oil—began to curl and peel away like photographs scorched by open flames.

I couldn't let them wipe my mind! With a feral roar, instead of pulling my hand free from the biometric socket, I slammed my entire body weight forward into it. "You want my memories? Then choke on my pain!"

I willingly dropped the firewalls of my cerebral cortex, dumping the lethal, agonizing physical pain my body was currently enduring straight back into the network through the nano-tentacles. Hell's Eye let out a violent, deafening hum, its crimson light flaring exponentially, washing the entire hall in the color of fresh blood.

The fake Old Chen's face twisted. The neural-stripping matrix gun in his hands erupted with a shrill screech, its ghostly blue arcs flickering violently due to a logical conflict in the system's root layer.

"Fire! Sever his physical connection!" the fake Old Chen shrieked, his raspy voice tearing completely to reveal pure, grating mechanical static.

A dozen thick, blue electrical arcs tore through the air like vipers, lunging straight for me. In that split second of imminent death, Lu Yan, whose entire body was still glitching with electronic snow, moved. She didn't dodge; instead, she executed a brutally ruthless maneuver—she reversed her grip and jammed the pulse crowbar directly into the neural port at the back of her own neck!

Sparks exploded. Lu Yan let out a muffled, agonizing groan as she forcibly severed her body's hacked bionic network. Her eyes rolled back for a fraction of a second, but then her auxiliary combat core booted up. Her dark pupils refocused, freezing over with an absolute absence of human emotion.

She blurred into a silhouette, drawing a high-frequency vibro-blade from her outer thigh. The blade shattered the two leading electrical arcs. Using the momentum, she launched herself into the air, driving her knee brutally into the fake Old Chen's chest. With a harrowing shriek of parting air, the vibro-blade pierced straight up through his jaw, pinning him dead to the metal pillar behind him.

No blood spilled. From the fake Old Chen's wound poured a thick, viscous black nano-sludge that looked like corrupted mercury. "Yun Feng..." The fake Old Chen's jaw was impaled, but his vocal projector still emitted a blood-curdling laugh against the pillar. "Did you really think... she was saving you?"

Simultaneously, the formatting countdown in my mind locked up at the exact moment it hit [2]. The Hell's Eye feedback loop had worked. The colossal "inverted flesh-ball" in the center of the hall began to convulse violently. Countless optical fibers snapped, thrashing wildly in the air like decapitated pythons as the hub crashed into total paralysis.

The surrounding cloned soldiers in hazmat suits collapsed stiffly to the ground like unplugged toys, melting into puddles of putrid black waste fluid.

"Thank god! Yun Feng, you did it!" The real Old Chen scrambled up from the deck, stumbling toward me with the sheer, unadulterated ecstasy of having survived painted across his withered face.

"Stay back!" I yanked my hand free from the socket, panting heavily as I turned my head. However, the sight before me turned my blood to absolute ice.

Lu Yan slowly pulled the vibro-blade from the fake Old Chen's corpse. She turned around. The electronic snow-screen on her arm was completely gone, replaced by a layer of pitch-black scales resembling a synthetic exoskeleton. She stepped over the wreckage, slowly raising the tip of her vibrating blade until it pointed directly at the space between my eyes.

Her pupils pulsed with the dead, crimson light unique to a cold-blooded hitman, her voice mechanical and hollow:

"System reboot complete. Sleeper protocol disengaged. Target: Yun Feng. Executing termination."

Not all hashtags will make you visible.

I do not believe aiwriting should be used. It means you did not write the story yourself and upvotes will not be given.

I advice you to change your hashtags.

Oh my goodness, thank you so much for the urgent warning! I have updated the hashtags immediately based on your advice.

I used the "aiwriting" tag by mistake because I use AI tools to render the concept art/cover images for the chapters, and I thought I had to declare any AI usage. But please rest assured, the story, the plot, and every single word of the text are 100% my own original creation!

Thank you so much for clarifying how the community and curators interpret that tag—you literally just saved my post and my hard work! I will strictly use the tags you recommended for all future chapters. You are the best! ❤️

Good you changed that, otherwise all votes will be pulled back.

Understood completely. Thank you for taking the time to check my revisions and for the leniency. I am still learning the strict formatting and originality guidelines here, but I am making sure everything is 100% compliant now. I promise to be extremely careful with all my future chapters. Your guidance is highly appreciated! 🙏

Wow, I am impressed. Using one's pain to fight the beast. Interesting way to stop the countdown!

Old Chen became more active, talkative, can he walk himself? What makes him so precious and how come he clungs to life? Still has 100% of his brains and free of loss of memory and Alzheimer's disease?

Lu Yan becomes more attractive, I also like that last generated picture...😏 It is good to be a hitman, it sounds so much better than spy or being the puppet with strings...
It must be great to wear that many masks and outfits, skin included. Her eyes are cured?
Yun Feng better watches his steps or soon he will not be the main character of this story.

Great thrilling end ... Which leaves me with the question:.What's for dinner?

Haha, you are absolutely a prophet! You totally called the "Hitman" twist in your previous comment! I’m so glad you loved that reveal and the AI-generated picture. As for Lu Yan's eyes, they aren't exactly "cured" in a medical sense—it's more like her auxiliary combat core took over her optical bionics, replacing human emotion with pure, cold targeting protocols. And you are right, she is completely stealing Yun Feng's spotlight right now! 😂

You are also asking the exact right questions about Old Chen. Why is this old man so tough? Why is his brain still 100% sharp? Let's just say... his past is one of the deepest secrets in the underground grid. He is definitely not just a random old man. Keep an eye on him!

As for that thrilling cliffhanger ending... What's for dinner? Well, in Yun Feng's world, they probably only have cheap, tasteless synthetic protein paste. But in the real world, after finishing this chapter, I'm definitely going to treat myself to a big, juicy burger to celebrate! What are you having for dinner? 🍔✨

Let me just think for a moment whether I might be able to ask a not "right" question... I’m not quite sure?

Well, I’m wondering whether all those changes to the body, or at least what’s left of the human body, might not put it under immense strain. To the point where it almost tears itself apart because of all those changes.

If the old Chen isn’t just anyone, then Yun Feng could do with being a bit more polite. 🤐

Oh, I thought they’d llick some of that leaking "oil". No waste.
Nobody’s ever thirsty. It’s quite handy, and no bathroom visits either.

... Wouldn’t that all stop beard growth as well?

I’m not really into burgers. I had the only egg that wasn’t spoiled, with mushrooms and tomatoes, salt and pepper.

Anyway, I’ve found the source of the stench in the clean fridge… a rotten egg… 😭

Did you enjoy your burger?

You hit the nail on the head! The heavy cybernetic modifications and flesh-to-metal conversion are indeed slowly tearing the characters apart, both physically and mentally. That's the core price of survival in this dystopia. And you are totally right about Old Chen—Yun Feng better watch his attitude, because the old man's hidden cards might just blow everyone's minds!

Your "synthetic oil and no-beard-growth" theory literally made me laugh out loud! That is the most cyberpunk recycling idea ever—zero waste, no bathroom breaks, and smooth mechanical chins. Brilliant! 😂

As for the fridge mystery... oh no, a rotten egg is the absolute worst smell in the universe! I'm so sorry you had to deal with that biohazard. My burger, on the other hand, was wonderfully juicy and hit the spot completely after a long day of writing. But next time, I'll trade it for your mushroom and tomato egg scramble, which sounds much healthier! 🍔🍄

This BOOMING vote is yours and well deserved!
❤️🍀
