INKtober 2026 - Contraption - There Number One

I didn’t enjoy doing this, so I’ll just leave it at that. It took me the whole day to draw this.
Of course, the word doesn’t just mean ‘little gadget’, but something more namely, some sort of invention homemade, whether it’s odd or not, and I couldn’t think of anything else but this. But oh, how I regret drawing this. And yes, even though I regret it, I finished it anyway, that’s just the sort of person I am.
I didn’t take many photos of the drawing process, just a few close-ups so you can see some details; perhaps useful if you’re using a mobile phone too.
No Process
The part I drew with a pencil turned out to be pointless. A process I most likely can skip, just not at the start since I need some time to get into drawing.
I like the brain and the inventory.

INKtober prompt: contraption

There was a time when I considered a device called the "Configurator"—conceived by Robert Sheckley in his short story "The Necessary Thing"—to be the strangest and most amusing contraption imaginable.
This device could produce anything you asked for, but it refused to create the same thing twice; for instance, if you had it conjure up a roast chicken out of raw matter, you would never be able to get another bird—in any form—from it again. Nowadays, however, I see quite a few other interesting and equally amusing gadgets! :)

That is interesting, but also a bit sad. I mean if you ask for a roast chicken and you can never ask for a bird again...it's better to ask for the alive bird... But just chicks...I don't know. We won't easily eat eagle or owl. 🤔
The drawing was quiet a burden and I cannot say I learned not to do it again 🤪
Today took me hours and I just made a sketch of the one for tomorrow. I already know I cannot make it the way I want so perhaps I should skip a day or let be and leave it as a draft.

The story of that device ended up being far more tragicomic: not knowing how to get it to produce provisions, the astronauts asked the device to create another copy of itself—and that turned out to be the one thing the device actually enjoyed producing, over and over again! :)
Sometimes it’s fun to do a quick, five-minute sketch :)
I don’t do preliminary pencil sketches; I draw everything in one go. If it turns out well—great! If not—well, I’ll just draw it better next time :)
I cannot draw so I try to catch up somehow and wish I could do those five minute sketchesnce that is my intention since months.
I have no clue why I all of a sudden come up with these time consuming drawings.
🤪
The good things is that it keeps me off the street (Dutch expression) and in the meanwhile I try out all those things I still have stored in my mind.

Perhaps what you meant to say is that you don’t know how to draw the way your art teacher at school required? But who’s to say that they know how to draw the way you do? :)
I wonder if a person could describe the same dish but with different words, who knows maybe with time you still will run out of time
I might, unless I learn to draw in a different way and therefore faster, or smaller drawings 🤔
Thank you for the support.
Havin gthis kind of Configurator a person should have endless fantasy :)

And a great deal of persuasive power and mental dexterity—to convince the configurator to do what we need it to do, rather than what it stubbornly refuses to do :) I suspect that a heavy hammer, pitted against the configurator’s own desire to continue existing, would serve as a compelling argument for further cooperation between a human and this very peculiar device :)
Congratulations!

Thank you for supporting INKtober @kouba01, do you draw too?
I wish you a great week!
Hi Kitty, that is really very adventurous. When I saw it it reminded me "Back to teh Future" movie when Doc. Brown was creating his special machines. He definitely would love your creative drawing a nd maybe would think if he could create it in reality :)

It is old-fashioned indeed. I thought the same. Somehow it looks more like a time machine than a robot. Did you notice the brains attached to it? This might be more future than oast after all (or I read @eagithao too much).
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.
P.s. instead of getting faster my drawings are more complexes, or messed up 🤣🤣🤣

I take full responsibility for poisoning your brain with too much cyberpunk horror! 🤣 But honestly, a time machine attached with human brains sounds like something straight out of Pan-Asia's secret labs. Please send that design over—I might need it for Clone 48 to escape the Abyss!
And don't worry about your drawings getting complex, true masterpieces are never simple! Keep that magnificent chaos going! 🚀

When exactly did you left this comment? It sounds as if you returned.
I would gladly give you this design, but unfortunately it belongs to number 1!
Besides 48 has some weird glitches ... And bugs.
Haha, time works differently down here in the Abyss! ⏱️
And you are completely right about 48—he is totally a defective model full of glitches and bugs! That is exactly what makes his survival so unpredictable. 😂 I guess we will have to leave that brilliant time machine to Number 1 for now.
Thanks for always playing along with the lore! Have a great day! 🚀
I used to draw pictures like this (well, not nearly as nice, of course—I'm all thumbs, sorry) with a pen on a sheet of graph paper while sitting in lectures at college)

Why don't you join INKtober (INK = ink and over stands for October). We use a daily prompt and draw what comes to mind. This was a bit too much. I am not sure if this is me and I need more time to finish it.
You can also doodle, it is about the fun and interesting to see how we all come up with something else.
Honestly, I just don’t have enough time for drawing) but you’re doing a great job! I’ve been keeping an eye on the participants)
It indeed consumes a lot of time. I made the sketch last night before midnight (more like 1 am this morning) and set the alarm at 7:30 to continue with the dip ink. The rest I did at work.
I'm back from vacation, so I have a lot of work to do)
Where did you go? .take it easy or you need a vacation to de-stress.
By the way, I intended to make five minute drawings instead of five + hours.
I came over specifically to see your artwork, and wow, I am so impressed! 🎉 Congratulations on keeping up with the INKtober challenge every single day—that takes serious dedication and creativity!
Whether it's the spooky Medusa vibes or the complex time-machine contraptions, your unique style always shines through. I just left a full upvote to support your amazing gallery! 🚀🎨
Now that the 'party' is almost over, please go sink into that comfortable waterbed or couch. You’ve drawn hard, supported others hard, and you truly deserve a great rest! ☕❤️"
Thank you...did you notice the brain attached?
If I stimulate others to draw daily, I cannot do nothing myself, or?
❤️🍀
I absolutely noticed the brain! 🧠 It gives the whole contraption such a cool, creepy sci-fi vibe. I love it!
And you are completely right—leading by example is the best way to motivate people. Your daily dedication to the challenge is truly inspiring all of us. You are a fantastic role model for the community! Keep up the amazing work! 🚀❤️
I used to pester a family friend's kid to draw something like this for me when I was a kid. I don't know why I did that, maybe I really like to see people draw.
I also like to see people at work, no matter if they draw, renovate the kitchen or knit. I observe, and note what they do, the process they go through. At many times their skills also have a calming effect like watching the fish in the water tank, or home some stare for longer at the washing machine tumbling...
It sounds as if you learn from how others draw and you can remember what they did and why and what you liked .

I never learn anything from that guy though. Maybe it's some kind of ASMR for me, in pre ASMR age. The other day, I watched someone painting a slab of braised pork belly on FB. Nice. Seeing how they used colors that I never expected, it's like watching a magic show for me.
Sometimes I do squat in front of my washing machine and watch it. I wish there's more space there, maybe a nice little sofa for me to sit and relax and watch the machine.

Most likely if you draw or paint frequently you will automatically start using what you saw or felt while watching it. This how people learn, and should learn.
It is indeed strange there's never room to sit comfortable in front of the washing machine... I wonder why. I am sure many watch it at work. It has a calming effect and helps to gather ones thoughts.
