We all know that human beings do out for medical check-up either monthly or any time suitable for the individual. To everyone, it's not a new thing because some human beings has made it a culture that they adhere to prevention is better than cure. But do you know that this method has been adopted in agriculture that disease prevention is made available to crops? Yes, it's true that some people dedicated themselves in preventing diseases in plants. The process of this prevention is called disease surveillance. Let's dive more into the world of disease surveillance to understand everything about it.
The Details about Disease Surveillance
One may ask what is disease surveillance and I'll answer that. I'll say it's a process where crops pests, plants disease and livestock health are being tracked. The core objective of this process includes:
- Early detection and prevention of disease: When a disease is spotted in a farm, it's likely that loss may occur. So, disease surveillance helps to detect any disease early enough to prevent it.
- Optimising chemical usage in the environment: It's true that repeated issuance of chemical like pesticides in the environment can harm the inhabitants of that environment. To prevent that, disease surveillance can minimise the usage of chemicals in our farmland.
As we understand the core objectives of disease surveillance, another question is how is it done. It will lead us to explore types of diseases surveillance.
- General surveillance: In this type of surveillance, the farmer or agronomist will keep a close eye for any unusual symptoms during the planting season. If any is found, it is reported to the agricultural ministries for immediate actions.
- Targeted surveillance: This type of surveillance is conducted in regions of suspected high risk zones of disease or specific seasons.
Importance of Disease Surveillance
Here are few importance of disease surveillance:
- Ensure food security and prevent famine: When disease surveillance is carried out, one will notice that abundance will be the order of the day. Because of such abundance, famine will be eliminated.
- Safeguard farmer's livelihood: When disease are spotted earlier and treated accordingly, the labour of the farmer won't be wasted. The livelihood and labour of that farmer will be appreciated in value of currency and produces from the farmer.
