The Earth has different living things thriving on it and one of it is livestock animals. The unique plan of the creator is that every creature will have their food allocated to them. Pastures is a food supply given to ruminant animals like goat, cow, sheep, etc. In simple terms, pasture refers to the green grass that these animals eat and is spread over a large portion of land. A question do come up which is "do pasture do deplete in its value? The answer is not far fetched as we'll see it in this post.
Explain the term "Pasture management"
In simple terms, pasture management is the art which people maintaining the plant health in a pasture so that it can match the livestock nutrition and in turn increase it's productivity over a long time. One will ask why why should we manage pasture? Then my answer will be that it's because human beings are directly or indirectly benefiting from livestock. The milk, hides and other products from livestock is something that benefits human beings. So, let's break down ways we can manage pastures.
- Organising a rest and recovery period: It is noticed that if livestock continues to feed on a given pasture, the pasture will deplete and lose it's value. So, the person saddle with the responsibility of pasture management should rotate the livestock in feeding so that the previous pasture can grow back.
- Engage in pasture renovation and seeding: No matter how you will rotate a given pasture, the reality is that wear and tear will still occur. So, it's important to reseed the pasture so that any empty patches will be filled.
Importance of Pasture management in Agriculture
Pasture management in Agriculture is very important and it's good that we know the benefits.
- Improved animal health: When pasture are being managed properly, it will make sure that the animal health is taken care of. This is in terms of the right ration needed for the animal at each stage of their growth.
- Economic importance: The cost of running livestock farming will be greatly reduced when the livestock farmer employs pasture management. Things like needs for commercial fertilizers, and other inputs will be reduced or eliminated.
