Agriculture is not just the name of putting seeds in the ground and getting a crop, but it is a process in which the farmer makes better use of his land, water, animals, crops and available resources. That is why I have chosen Integrated Farming from this week's given words.

Integrated farming I think is a method of agriculture in which different agricultural activities are linked together. For example, a farmer may raise crops as well as raise animals. Natural manure from animals can be reused in the field, while some agricultural material left over from crops can be used as animal feed. Thus, the profit from one work is used in another work.

The best thing about this method is better utilization of resources. A lot of material is usually wasted in the field after harvesting, but in integrated systems, efforts are made to use as much of the material as possible for some other useful purpose. Similarly, by properly handling animal waste, natural fertilizers can be produced. This can help in maintaining soil fertility and also gives the farmer an opportunity to reduce fertilizer costs.

In integrated farming, activities such as raising vegetables, fruits, grains, livestock and in some cases fish can also be integrated with each other. However, the same method is not suitable for every farmer. Land area, water availability, climate, local conditions and financial capability of the farmer must be kept in mind.

I think one of the main advantages of this system is that the farmer is not dependent on only one source of income. If the production of one crop decreases, some income can be generated from other agricultural activities. This can help reduce risks.

In an agricultural country like Pakistan, attention to such practices may be particularly useful. Many of our farmers work with limited resources, so it is important to use the available resources wisely. Integrated farming teaches us that land, water, animals and crops should not be considered separately but as part of a complete system.

In the end I would like to say that successful agriculture is not just about getting more production. The real success is when the farmer strikes a balance between better production, adequate income and soil health while protecting his resources from being wasted. Integrated Farming is an important step towards this thinking.
