There once lived a little goat called Koko in a village that was surrounded by lush fields and towering palm trees. Koko was not the largest goat in the village nor was he the quickest either. What made him stand out from the rest was his characteristic of observing everything around him and making sure of things before coming to any conclusion. Whereas all the other goats used to run at the slightest of sounds, Koko would stop and listen to the sounds carefully.

One day while grazing by the outskirts of the village, the goats found themselves listening to a loud sound emerging from the bushes. “Run!” screamed the elder goats. The goats ran immediately. Koko too followed, but something stopped him from doing so. Koko turned his head towards the bushes where the sound originated from. He realized that it was not an animal making that sound but a cry for help.

Slowly, Koko approached the bushes. Among the branches of the bushes was a little bird that had its nest disturbed by the storm. Its wing was entangled in the branches and it could not release itself from it. Koko looked around himself, but there were no other animals around him. He could have run off just as the other animals did, but he remembered something that his owner would always say – “Bravery is not about fighting, sometimes it’s about being alone while others have left.”

Koko carefully pushed the branches apart with his horns. The little bird struggled for a moment before finally becoming free. It flew to a nearby tree and rested on a branch. From above, it made a soft sound as if it were thanking him.

The goats came back to their house late that night except for Koko. The owner of Koko saw that his body was full of leaves and asked him why. But Koko could not speak in human language. However, the next day something unexpected happened. The same bird came and started singing above Koko’s house. Then more and more birds followed it.

After this particular day, Koko became well-known in the whole village as the brave goat. He made people realize that bravery is not all about having a strong heart or being fearless at all times. There are instances when bravery is about taking the time to observe one’s surroundings and help those in need.
