Pick and Write [Animal Breeding]👉#43
Animal breeding is a kind of farm industry in which animals are selected and breed to introduce specific desired characteristics into the next generation of animals. The offspring will typically grow faster, have a higher milk production, better meat quality, be more resistant to disease, and have better reproductive performance. Animal breeding is a major aspect of livestock farming.
Significance of Animal Breeding
Animal breeding plays a vital role in the future of a successful livestock farming business. Farmers can produce stronger, more productive animals by choosing healthy, genetically good animals to breed. For instance, a farmer who breeds cow – can get calves from the much easier and high milk producing ability cow.
Likewise, the selective breeding of goats and sheep with strong growth can aid the farmer to produce more meat in a shorter period. Poultry farmers can also take advantage of the changes by breeding a flock of chickens that lay more eggs or gain weight more easily.
Resistance to Diseases: ADVERTISEMENTS: When animal breeders select for animals that are better at resisting certain diseases, they are able to get animals which are resistant to these diseases. It may lead to reduced veterinary costs and to reduce the loss due to animals' diseases.
Types of Animal Breeding
There are two types of breeding using the natural mate. They are: Natural mating: Natural matting occurs when the male animal of the pair mates with the female pair. It is used among small scale farmers because it is easy to practise.
The process of depositing semen from a selected male into the reproductive tract of a female without natural copulation. Artifical insemination allows farmers to use the superior genetics from a superior buck without maintaining him on the farm. It requires some knowledge and equipment and a veterinarian.
Selective breeding is also carried out. This means selecting animals with desirable features to be their parents. This way, farmers can selectively increase the quality of their animals.
Problems with Breeding Animals
Like all practices, animal breeding is not perfect. Difficulties faced are generally related to the purchase of high quality breeding stock, poor record keeping, lack of access to veterinary services and poor knowledge of breeding methods. Problems may also arise with inbreeding, when close relatives are crossed and may lead to an increased risk of hereditary faults or reduced production.
Farmers can to address this problem by: asking for advice from the veterinarian, recording the breeding records, choosing the right breeding stock.
Conclusion
Finally, the lesson I have learned about the importance of animal breeding is as follows: animal breeding is an important agriculture business, as it increases the production, quality, as well as profitability of our animals. If our farmers follow proper animal breeding techniques and keep healthy animals, they will be able to increase food production. I think farmers should be educated about good breeding practices.
Breeding is not for meat alone. It is for better, healthier and stronger production tomorrow.
