Crop breeding is simply the science and practice of improving crop plants by selecting and crossing plants with desirable characteristics. The main aim of crop breeding done by farmers is to produce new crops or improve crop varieties that can perform better under different environmental conditions.

It helps farmers to get crops with higher yield, better quality crops, resistance to pests and diseases, drought tolerance, early maturity, salinity tolerance, and improved nutritional value. Farmers also make use of crop breeding to plant the best crops.

The objective of crop Breeding:

  • To increase crop yield to produce more food from a given area of farmland.

  • To improve the quality of crops and the nutritional, processing, storage, and taste qualities of crops.

  • To detect crops that cannot withstand common pests and diseases.

  • To develop varieties of crops that can survive Salinity, heat, drought, or other harsh conditions.

  • To improve nutritional value and increase important nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and proteins.

  • To produce crops that mature within a shorter period

There are different methods of crop breeding, and the common methods are: mutation, selection, hybridisation, modern molecular breeding, and polyploid breeding. In agriculture, crop breeding is very important to farmers because it helps farmers to produce crops that are more productive, resistant, and nutritious.
