Animal Activities #93
In the midst of green fields and large trees, there was a village where a farmer by the name Chukwu kept a number of animals. Among his animals were a dog called Bruno and a goat by the name of Nwoke. The dog Bruno was a strong and loyal brown dog, whereas the goat Nwoke was a smart animal always looking out for his own interests.

Although they were completely different animals, both Bruno and Nwoke grew up together eating the same food, playing around the compound and sleeping under the same mango tree. Bruno considered Nwoke his best friend, whereas Nwoke considered being good to be a sign of weakness. Once, Chukwu noticed that some of his chickens had gone missing. He became very angry and warned all the animals that whoever was found disturbing his farm would be severely punished.
That same day, after returning from the market, Nwoke confronted Chukwu and said he had witnessed Bruno attacking the chickens. This was not true, but Nwoke told it with such certainty that Chukwu believed him since he had been looking for a culprit.
Bruno was tied to a tree and was left without any food for the night. He stared at Nwoke with bewildered eyes as to why his best friend had accused him of something he did not commit.
Nwoke tried to avoid eye contact with Bruno and told himself that he had to take care of his own self-interests rather than the friendship.

After several days, a heavy storm passed through the village, causing rain to flood the compound and the animals had trouble finding shelter. Amidst all this confusion, Nwoke escaped through the damaged part of the fence and ran towards the forest. But he ended up getting stuck in a muddy ditch which was covered with dead leaves.
He called out for help, but the storm made his cries inaudible.
Bruno, who had at last been freed after Chukwu found out that the missing chickens were stolen by an animal, heard the cries of Nwoke. Hearing the voice of his friend, he ran towards him to find him struggling in the ditch.
For an instant, Bruno recalled the false accusation, the hunger, and the isolation he had been through. He could have walked away and let Nwoke suffer the results of his betrayal.
However, Bruno barked fiercely until he was heard by Chukwu. The farmer came and using a strong rope, rescued Nwoke from the ditch.

Ashamed and shivering, Nwoke bowed his head.
"Why did you help me?" he questioned Bruno. "All that I have done to you, I was sure that you will let me suffer."
Bruno looked at him and answered, "Your misbehavior gave me a reason to be angry, but it did not give me a reason to be cruel."
These words cut deeper into Nwoke's heart than any punishment ever would. For the first time, he realized that he had become selfish because of his cleverness, whereas Bruno became strong because of his kindness.
The next day, Nwoke confessed all to Chukwu. He told him that he had been lying about Bruno and had been stealing vegetables from the farm. Although Chukwu was upset, he respected the goat for being honest and gave him a chance to make up for it.
Nwoke turned out to be a more reliable animal from that day on because he could never forget his savior who had saved him when he had not deserved anything from him.

Morals Lesson: Real character is seen in the way we deal with people who have betrayed us. Forgiving someone doesn't mean forgetting the betrayal but not letting someone else's betrayal ruin our own integrity. It may so happen that the person whom we betray becomes the one to teach us about love and mercy.
