The Fowl, the Goat, and the Three Children

In the serene village of Umuoma, Chika, Daniel, and Zainab were always together after class.

Chika was very curious. She loved dismantling old radios and asking herself how they functioned. Daniel was fond of sketching machines, bridges, and strange vehicles in his notebook. Zainab was quite unique compared to her friends. She loved posing various questions on how technology could be applied in making people’s lives easier in their village.

There was a brown fowl and a gentle black-and-white goat near their school. These animals belonged to an old farmer who was always depending on the kids to assist him in some chores.

It was one afternoon when the three friends were sitting under a mango tree after helping the old man fetch water from a distant well.

Daniel sighed.

“Imagine if water could come through a pipe directly into his compound. He wouldn't have to walk all that distance every morning.”

“And imagine if the road wasn't full of holes,” Chika added. “During the rainy season, even motorcycles struggle to pass here.”

Zainab opened her school notebook.

“Maybe these are problems we are supposed to learn how to solve.”

The three friends became quiet.

That evening, while walking home, they saw the old farmer struggling to carry a heavy basket. His goat followed behind him, while the fowl searched for food around his feet.

Chika quickly helped him.

The old man smiled.

“You children have strong hands today,” he said. “But one day, your knowledge may become stronger than your hands.”

The words stayed with them.

The next morning at school, their science teacher spoke about electricity, computers, engineering, medicine, agriculture, and communication technology.

She explained that technology was not only about phones and entertainment.

“It is a tool,” she said. “If you use it carelessly, it can waste your time. If you use it wisely, it can help you change lives.”

The three friends looked at one another.

They understood.

Their phones, computers, books, and the internet could either become distractions or become tools for learning.

From that day, they began spending less time scrolling through meaningless videos and more time studying.

Chika started learning about electrical systems.

Daniel became interested in civil engineering.

Zainab began studying computer science and water-management technology.

Whenever they became tired, they remembered the old farmer carrying water.

Years passed.

As the three friends aged, their childhood ambitions gradually turned into a reality.

Chika grew up to be an electrical engineer. She developed cheap systems through which people in rural areas could have access to electricity.

Daniel grew up to be a civil engineer. He worked alongside other engineers to come up with better roads, bridges, and drainage systems that would withstand any amount of rainfall.

Zainab became a technology expert. She came up with cheap methods for monitoring water supply and managing pipe-borne water.

They all ended up working in the village from which they hailed.

The old road was repaired.

Clean water began flowing through pipes.

Farmers were given improved technology to keep track of their crops.

Health workers were provided with digital means that made it easier for them to serve the patients.

However, the three friends did not rest on their laurels.

They recalled the elderly people who used to struggle carrying burdens, fetch water from afar, and perform many other tasks that became difficult due to their old age.

They helped introduce machines and simple digital systems that reduced some of those burdens.

One afternoon, Chika, Daniel, and Zainab returned to the village.

The old farmer was sitting beneath the same mango tree.

His goat was now very old, and the fowl wandered slowly around the compound.

The farmer smiled when he saw them.

“You have returned,” he said.

Daniel laughed.

“And you don't have to carry that heavy water bucket anymore.”

The old man looked toward the new water pipe beside his house.

He smiled quietly.

“I remember when the three of you used to sit here and dream about this.”

Zainab looked at the village road.

“We didn't build everything alone. We only learned enough to become part of the people who could make a difference.”

The farmer nodded.

“Then your education has served its purpose.”

The three friends looked at the children playing nearby.

Some were carrying books. Others were using tablets to learn.

Chika smiled.

“Technology will keep changing.”

Daniel added, “And the problems of society will keep changing too.”

Zainab looked at the children.

“That is why they must learn.”

The fowl suddenly crowed loudly.

The old goat lifted its head.

Everyone laughed.

For a moment, the village seemed to remember the three curious children who had once dreamed beneath the mango tree.

Their story had begun with a simple question:

“What if we learned enough to make life easier for someone else?”

And that question became the beginning of something much bigger.
