Rushing Turned Into a Painful Kitchen Accident 😭🔥.

in Steem Cameroon • yesterday

Hi guys, accept warm greetings from the motherland of Cameroon, and welcome back to my blog with love❤️from @chant.

Guys, permit me to share with you all about an experience I honestly did not see coming. I am usually very conscious of everything I do, especially in the kitchen. I always try to be careful because I don't want to end up with one of those “…stories that touch the heart” but sometimes, no matter how careful we think we are, accidents can happen in just a few seconds.

This particular morning, I was seriously trying to catch up with time. I had to prepare the kids for school, get everything ready for my daughter to take her bath, and at the same time, I was already thinking about my work schedule. You know those mornings when it feels like the clock is running faster than you? 😩

Hot water burnt on my leg.

I was rushing to pour boiled water into a bucket for my daughter to bathe when, honestly, I don't even know exactly what went wrong. All I remember was feeling boiling water pour onto my leg, because of the sudden heat and shock, I reacted instinctively. Unfortunately, the remaining hot water also spilt onto my leg.

I screamed and at that moment, the pain was something else. It felt as though someone had placed fire directly on my leg. 🔥😭

Then I remembered something my mom taught us when we were younger. She had always mentioned using salt as a first-aid remedy for hot-water burns. I had also heard people recommend things like natural honey, egg and even toothpaste.

So, in that moment of panic, I reached for what was closest to me which was salt.

Of course, I applied it to the affected area because I believed it would help prevent the bubbles from developing. I also took some pain medication because the pain was becoming unbearable.

Looking at my leg afterwards, I could clearly see a difference between the areas where I had applied the salt and the areas where I hadn't. The parts that were not fully covered appeared to have developed more serious burns, while the areas where I had applied the salt looked darker. I was told that after about seven days, the affected skin would peel and eventually heal.

Nonetheless, this experience has taught me something important that not everything we learn as a home remedy is necessarily the safest first aid.

After doing some research, I learned that for a fresh hot-water burn, the recommended first step is generally to cool the burn under cool running water for about 20 minutes. Substances such as salt, toothpaste, egg or other household products should not be applied to a fresh burn because they can irritate the skin or make proper medical treatment more difficult.

That really made me think about how many things we inherit from our parents and communities as “first aid” without ever questioning whether they are medically recommended.

Thankfully, I am taking the necessary steps to care for my leg, and I hope it continues healing properly. 🙏

Between getting the children ready, preparing for work and trying to beat the clock, I allowed myself to move faster than usual in the kitchen. And just one little accident was enough to remind me that our health and safety should always come first.

So, my people, I want to hear from you. What traditional or local first-aid remedy were you taught for hot-water burns, and what have you learned about treating burns safely? Please share your experiences in the comments. Maybe your story will help someone else avoid making the same mistake I did. Stay safe, everyone✌️🫶🔥

Saludos Amiga,
