We have seen that China is already capable of manufacturing thousands of humanoid robots, but there is an industrial reason behind this scale: even before a major humanoid industry existed in the country, much of the supply chain required to build them was already in place. A robot of this type relies on motors, servomotors, precision gear reducers, joints, sensors, cameras, batteries, chips, structural materials, and electronic systems.
Many of these components are already mass-produced in China for other industries—such as electric vehicles, electronics, drones, industrial machinery, and automation systems. According to TrendForce, components like servomotors, gear reducers, and lithium batteries can be rapidly supplied by Chinese manufacturers, thereby cutting costs and reducing the time required to move from development to production.
The electric vehicle industry played a key role in this process; during its expansion, China developed factories and suppliers specializing in batteries, electric motors, power electronics, sensors, materials, and control systems. Part of this infrastructure can now be leveraged by the robotics industry. Consequently, when a company develops a new generation of humanoids, it does not necessarily need to build the entire industrial supply chain from scratch; instead, it can tap into a network of suppliers that are already mass-producing similar components.
That ecosystem also enables rapid production scaling; according to TrendForce, it took AgiBot approximately three months to go from producing 1,000 robots to 5,000, and another three months or so to reach 10,000. Unitree has also prepared the industrial capacity to produce up to 75,000 humanoids annually; while this doesn't necessarily mean the company will produce or sell that many, it demonstrates the scale of capacity Chinese manufacturers are gearing up for.
Scale can trigger another effect: the more robots deployed in factories, warehouses, and training centers, the greater the volume of data collected on tasks performed in the physical world. This data can be used to train new artificial intelligence models; the next generation of robots can then receive improved models, return to the real world, and generate new data. However, there is an even more critical factor determining the industry's future: financial return. Consequently, one of the next steps will be to see if early buyers return to purchase more robots.
Ultimately, China has already demonstrated that it possesses an industrial supply chain capable of mass-producing humanoids and rapidly scaling that production. The next test will be different: these robots will need to operate for longer periods, make fewer errors, and perform tasks with sufficient productivity to justify their cost. Manufacturing thousands of humanoids is only part of the equation; to declare China the winner of the humanoid robot race, they must prove they can transform that scale into work, and that work into profit.
