It is a fact that humanoid robots are becoming increasingly adept at walking, running, and performing physical tasks; however, a Chinese company is addressing a different challenge: making these machines appear more human-like when interacting with us. During the 2026 World Robot Conference held in Beijing from August 19 to 23, Noetix Robotics unveiled a new generation of biomimetic robots built upon a shared platform.

Highlights included Xiawe and her male counterpart, Xiao Chen, alongside characters such as X Chen, Senui, Chiyao, Xuangli, and Yelan. Despite their visual differences, the concept behind these machines is relatively simple. Rather than developing a unique robotic system for each one, Noetix employs an architecture known as XH1, primarily modifying each robot's appearance and personality traits via AI. The result is a versatile robotic platform capable of adopting various identities without requiring major structural changes.

One of the most impressive features is the face; the head utilizes custom platinum-silicone skin designed to replicate characteristics such as texture, elasticity, and the fine lines found on human skin. Beneath this lies a system with 32 active degrees of freedom. These mechanisms allow for the control of specific facial regions to produce movements—such as blinking, changes in facial expression, and lip-syncing during speech—yet appearance is only one component of the system.

The robots also feature a multimodal perception architecture; depending on the configuration, the setup may include two RGB cameras positioned in the eyes, an additional body-mounted camera, LiDAR depth sensors, ultrasonic sensors, and a four-microphone array. These sensors enable the system to visually track people, interpret the environment, and detect voice commands.

Noetix states that it also worked to improve interaction in noisy environments. The acoustic system was optimized to enhance speech recognition accuracy and microphone pickup sensitivity. The response generation system was also improved to better maintain conversation context and produce more natural-sounding responses. Even the audio system received attention: a speaker with a specially designed acoustic cavity aims to produce a more immersive voice during interactions, though perhaps the most interesting aspect lies in the software.

The various characters may share much of the same underlying hardware, while their individual traits are defined by behavioral profiles and aesthetic variations; for instance, Seniu was introduced with a gentler personality and a forest-inspired aesthetic, whereas Xiaou sports a distinctive look associated with a desert character, Shualin was given a more serene personality, and Yelan was presented with a more mysterious identity.

This strategy reflects a trend increasingly seen in the Chinese robotics industry: machines that continue to evolve after leaving the factory. Rather than delivering a product with essentially fixed capabilities, manufacturers aim to create platforms capable of incorporating new behaviors, functions, and content over time—much like the evolution seen with smartphones and smart vehicles.
