SpaceX's fastest recorded spaceflight

Souce

SpaceX has just set a new U.S. record: the Crew-13 mission transported astronauts to the International Space Station in just 7 hours and 55 minutes, marking the fastest trip ever made between Earth and the ISS by a crewed U.S. spacecraft.

For comparison, the previous U.S. record was 12 hours and 33 minutes, set in 2024; the difference was even more pronounced when looking at SpaceX’s own missions, as Crew-11 took approximately 14 hours and 43 minutes to reach the station. However, there is a nuance: the Dragon capsule did not achieve this simply by flying much faster; much of the result stemmed from an extremely favorable combination of the launch timing and the International Space Station's exact orbital position.

Typically, after entering space, a capsule must execute a series of maneuvers to gradually adjust its orbit and reach the station at the precise location; in this instance, however, orbital geometry allowed the Dragon spacecraft to begin its pursuit under particularly favorable conditions, resulting in a journey that was several hours shorter.

This matters for reasons that go beyond merely setting a record: the less time a crew spends inside the capsule before reaching the station, the shorter the period they are exposed to cramped quarters, microgravity, and the demands of rendezvous operations. Even so, SpaceX does not hold the world record—that distinction still belongs to Russia; in 2020, a Soyuz capsule transported its crew to the ISS in approximately 3 hours and 3 minutes using an ultra-fast rendezvous profile.

Nevertheless, reaching the station in under eight hours demonstrates that U.S. crewed missions are also increasingly shortening the duration of this journey. Given that the ISS orbits Earth at an altitude of approximately 400 kilometers, there is an interesting irony to it all: while reaching space may take only a few minutes, the truly difficult part is rendezvousing with a station that is traveling around the Earth at nearly 28,000 kilometers per hour.
