Let’s Go Shopping - Steemit Challenge Season 34

Today, we’re going to find out how much I spend on groceries here in Spain as of October 2026. We’ve come to Carrefour because it’s the closest store to our home—though I know there are other well-known brands, such as Mercadona, which I believe is the leading supermarket chain in the country.

We’ll start in the butcher section—take a look at the different meat prices here. We picked up a cut called "tapas"—which is the same as what’s known as "pulpa negra" elsewhere. In most markets, meat comes pre-packaged, but we prefer coming to Carrefour because they have a full-service butcher counter. You can ask for the specific cut you want, in the exact amount you need, and they’ll prepare it for you—it’s much fresher that way compared to buying it pre-packaged.

We’re going to show you some of the products we buy and usually bring home each week; naturally, there are items that last us more than a month, while others need to be bought weekly to ensure freshness.

Obviously, one of the great advantages of being in Spain is the tremendous array of cured meats you’ll see—cured ham, jamón ibérico, jamón serrano, and all those other types of ham people love; you can find all this variety at Carrefour. To give you an example, a 200g pack of bacon in Spain costs €1.99, whereas it’s much more expensive elsewhere.

Then there are the whole ham legs—if you’d like to buy one, they’re €89 each for the ones of this size that you see here; I didn’t end up buying one this time, though.

In the milk aisle—there’s certainly no shortage of choice here, with plenty of options—we usually buy this Puleva brand; it works out to €1.60 per liter.

You can see different prices for Colgate toothpaste; we usually buy the one that costs €2.85.

Another very important part of our diet is yellow cheese; here you can see these slices—15 slices, or 300g—which cost €4.09. However, a big advantage is that they often come as a "two-for-one" deal, so you save a little money. That’s why it pays to keep an eye out for those offers; you can actually buy a larger quantity while paying less than the average price.

Here I’ll show you one of the aisles I was most looking forward to sharing: the olive oil aisle. I remember that back in my other country, all the olive oils cost well over 20 dollars; here, by contrast, Carrefour-brand olive oil costs €8.95. We usually buy the one that comes in a glass bottle, which costs €5.95 for 750 ml. I truly think that’s one of the great advantages of living here in Spain.
We spent a total of €83.35. This doesn’t represent our total monthly spending—in fact, we usually spend around €600 per month. In this particular shopping trip, we picked up some items intended to last the entire month—things like cleaning supplies, including products for the oven, and so on. These aren’t items we typically need to buy on a weekly basis; instead, we tend to purchase them at the beginning of the month, and they often last us a month or even longer.
