TERRORISMO ROSSO E NERO 🇮🇹🇬🇧
🇮🇹

I recently read a book by Vincenzo Mantovani titled Il cattivo maestro (The Bad Mentor), which deals with the "Years of Lead" and the terrorism of that decade.
It tells the story of a university professor who embraced the movement's cause without ever resorting to violence himself, remaining a sort of idealistic sympathizer—a familiar story.
In the novel, he serves eight years in prison and then emigrates to France, the adopted home of many Red Brigades members—some of whom still reside there.
The book—which straddles the fine line between fiction and actual events—conveys the idea that while Red terrorists were largely killed, imprisoned, turned state's evidence, or fled abroad, the "Black" (neo-fascist) terrorists mostly got away with it.
The explanation is clear.
At a historical moment when the PCI (Italian Communist Party) was on the verge of power with 35–40% of the vote, a climate had to be created that linked Communism to terrorism; the goal was to frighten the public and make them desire military intervention.
It is no coincidence that Gladio and other neo-fascist groups emerged during this period; in league with our intelligence services and elements within the state apparatus, they carried out attacks to stoke national tension and conjure up the "Red menace."
There had also been the seizure of power by the Colonels in Greece—an event that led neo-fascists and their allies within the state apparatus to hope that a similar scenario might be possible in Italy.
However, to escalate tension, it was necessary for Red terrorism to be the source of public fear; the book discusses how fascists and state agents infiltrated the Red Brigades—even at high levels—to ensure the group carried out increasingly brutal attacks. I was young back then and remember little, but I do know that Moro was kidnapped just as the "Historic Compromise"—a move championed by the Christian Democrat leader himself to bring the Communists into the government—was on the verge of becoming a reality.
It is a vast subject, and what remains unsaid often outweighs what is actually spoken; the fact remains, however, that the "Red" terrorists all met a grim end, whereas the "Black" terrorists either got elected to Parliament or took refuge in friendly countries—living the good life openly, without ever having to hide.
