Unexpected happening

During my childhood days, the elderly people around me used to tell my mum that I was going to make a good journalist or broadcaster, even though I liked doctors and nurses so much. And some of them still call me "mma teacher" till this day.

Maybe it was because I used to be inquisitive. Maybe it was because I read anything I could lay my hands on and tried to explain what I had read. Or perhaps it was because I could scan through a newspaper in a very short time and answer a good number of questions offhand or because I was a talkative 😂 there was never a quiet time with me.

When I entered secondary school, I loved French, Ibibio and literature texts and poetry ,especially those written in Ibibio and efik language.

But when I was introduced to Literature as a subject in senior secondary school, I knew I was going to disappoint the neighbors , my uncle's, Sunday school teachers Nwaubike, uncle sunny and aunty Florence ,who had already seen the journalist in me. 😂

I didn't like Literature. I disliked it from the day our teacher taught us about the genres of literature. I had to double my efforts just so I could pass and move to the next class and I hated red ink in my results.

I was traumatised when our teacher introduced us to a literary text with very tiny handwriting. I nearly went crazy! Not to talk of when we were introduced to a play and a poem. I almost lost my mind.... I never knew it was just the beginning untill we were asked to read Anthony and Cleopatra, a tragedy by Williams Shakespeare and then I felt like I could just write a letter , asking the subject to be removed because, WHYYYYY are the authors not straightforward? 😩😭

What happened to simply saying, "She passed out" instead of using four or five poetic lines to communicate the same thing?

Thinking about it today, I wish I could see those people and tell them that I finally chose Nursing, very unrelated.
things never turned out the way they wanted for me..even life itself became unfair at some point.

I had chose Nursing because that was where I realised I could read even when I was completely worn out. Give me my nursing textbooks, and I'll keep going, even when my eyes are begging for mercy. I also realized that being a part of one's recovery process gave me so much joy and even loving people despite their health conditions.

I now understand that I wasn't lazy when it came to reading. I just needed to find my kind of reading , I needed to discover myself.

I'm smiling that you read my thoughts. Have a great weekend.

Why not give literature another go? It could be a nice balance to your demanding job... We grow through what we read ;-))
