LEARNING A SKILL- HOW IMPORTANT IT IS. .

Lets talk about 'learning' first. Learning is trying and getting to know some certain things. Learning is a continous process,it doesn't necessarily stop when we leave school. We don't even learn at schools only, you learn in different places not necessarily in an education system. Now when it comes to 'skill',it's something you know how to do. It's something you know you can either recreate or create. So learning a skill is practically you trying out something new, something that will stay with you for a long long time. It's more like a hand work, something only you can do with your hands.

Learning a new skill

Learning skills is a big breakthrough. There are so many graduates who after school haven't used their certificates to look for jobs, you know why? They are already doing something for themselves, they have a skill. They are using it to feed themselves. They are not dependent on their certificates all in the name of work. Don't get me wrong,i didnt say going to school was a waste of time or resources. I meant having something you can actually do with your bare hands will really save you attimes. When I write in most cases,I use myself as an example because I'm not just writing,I'm also sharing my journey too. I had the privilege to learn a skill immediately after my secondary school years ago. I had always wanted to learn graphics designing and all that but the center was very far from where we lived back then, after the back and forth,my mum then suggested I learnt hair dressing, how to tie gele and how to make someone up. I didnt like the idea at first but after thoughts,I had to do it. The salon too wasn't far from our house,so I was okay with it. I started learning and practicing. I didn't just learn and stayed idle,I had to put in the work. I had to show up learning.

The hair I made when I was still learning

I was really very grateful that I didn't miss the chance of learning this particular skill because I didnt know what I would have done if I hadn't. It's not just about learning the skill, its also about doing it rightly. We should also learn and know how to market our skills shamelessly. Be loud about your skill and what you do. You don't expect people to know what you do when you don't preach about it,when you don't tell people what and what you do. If you don't know how to market yourself and your skill, then I'm sorry to say this, you're not ready to make a living. You will have trouble looking for clients that will patronize your skill. I also braid my fellow hair stylist hair, she's my friend. I braid hers and she braid mine, that's the sweetest thing in having a hairstylist friend. I've been loud about what i do. I announce and preach about it anywhere I do. Most of the hair I've braided came from referrals mostly from my mum,her friends and people that have seen my work outside. If my work was bad,no one would refer me. If I hadn't been loud about my work no one would refer me.

When I braided my friend's hair

I didn't learn one skill, just like I said I added two other skills to it. I'm now working on my own, even though I don't have a shop yet. I'm still announcing my skills and more and more people keep coming to book appointments. I didn't stop at learning hair dressing, I wanted to learn other things too. I didnt want to stop learning. Then I decided to transition into the digital space. We are an era of Ai,so I had to take advantage of it. We didn’t have the the money at the time to register me in a tech academy,so we casually discussed it with a distant aunt of mine and then the next thing we saw was that she already paid for me to join a tech academy. Trust me,my joy knew no bounds,i was really excited. What am I trying to pin point,I didn't stop at learning hair dressing, I kept learning and I'm still learning uptill now.

Learning is not always easy. It comes with mistakes and struggle to understand certain things we are not used to. It can teach us to be patient, confident and creative. Never stop learning.
