L2s Struggling for Survival
Raise millions. TVL hits billions. Everyone gets bullish. Then the airdrop farmers leave, and the chain is almost dead.
That is the 2024–2026 Layer 2 cycle in one line.
On 2 October 2026, Blast said the quiet part out loud. The economics of running the chain no longer make sense. Maintenance costs exceed revenue. There is no credible path to sustainability. Users were told to withdraw to Ethereum by 26 October. Blast once held more than $2 billion. Last month it made about $1,800 from usage.
It is not alone. Ancient8 is already marked deprecated, with $0 DeFi TVL, after raising about $11 million. Lumia is a ghost chain: no DeFi TVL and only dozens of transactions a day. Other 2025–26 wind-downs or pullbacks include Kinto, Loopring, Zero Network, and zkLend.
The ones still “live” are often worse than shut down, because someone is still paying to post batches to Ethereum for almost no users.
Chain-level sequencer revenue, 24h
Snapshot from DefiLlama chain pages, 4 October 2026. These are chain fees / chain revenue (sequencer fees net of L1 posting costs), not app or protocol revenue. Daily figures move.
- Movement: $0.07
- Sophon: about $0
- LightLink: $0
- Fraxtal: $2.14
- Lisk: $3.83
- Soneium: $5.77
- Hemi: $12
- Mode: $14
- Manta: about −$18
- Scroll: −$11
- Zora: −$2.85
- Taiko: about $50 (chain line)
- Metis: about $52 chain REV
- BOB: about $85–100
- Polygon: about $79,188 (not $79)
Negative means the chain paid Ethereum more to settle that day than it collected in fees. That is the Blast problem in miniature.
Context that makes the dollars look worse:
- Manta raised about $25 million. Chain revenue was negative on the day checked. DeFi TVL about $3.2 million.
- Hemi raised about $30 million. Chain REV about $12.
- Metis had a $100 million foundation raise. Chain REV about $52. DeFi TVL about $2.6 million.
- Lisk still has a market cap around $63 million on about $139k of DeFi TVL.
- Ancient8 raised about $11 million and is deprecated at $0 TVL.
- Zora chain revenue was −$2.85, with DeFi TVL around $47k.
- LightLink chain fees were $0, with DeFi TVL around $24k.
Polygon is the correction to the doom list. Chain revenue was about $79,000 in 24 hours, not $79. Distribution and real usage still pay. Base is the other obvious survivor: a corporate on-ramp, not a points program.
MegaETH is not on the dead list. On the same day it still showed meaningful fee activity (protocol revenue on the order of a few hundred dollars in 24h) and on the order of $18 million in TVL. Early, not finished.
What actually happened
Most of these chains were never businesses. They were incentive machines. TVL was rented. When the emissions stopped, the users left, and the only thing left was the bill for posting data to Ethereum.
A sequencer that makes $14 a day cannot pay a team, an audit, or a bridge watchdog. Blast’s own numbers show the full arc: peak TVL about $2.2 billion in June 2024, down to about $32 million at the shutdown announcement, with about $1,793 in usage revenue the prior month. About $63 million was still in the canonical bridge when the team told users to leave.
Three outcomes from here:
- Shutdown, like Blast. Honest, and better for users than a silent bridge.
- Zombie mode. The chain stays up, TVL is dust, and the token still trades on leftover narrative.
- Consolidation into the few chains with distribution: Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, and Polygon-scale networks.
If your L2 cannot cover L1 costs on a normal day, it is not early. It is late.
