A Warning - Part I
I received a phone call at midnight.
“Beware of your wife. She will be the cause of your death.”
It was none other than my father-in-law.
I was utterly confused. What kind of joke was this? I tried calling him back, intending to make him feel ashamed of pulling such a disgusting stunt.
But the call wouldn’t go through.
I looked at my wife, who was sleeping peacefully beside me.
What the hell was going on?
Fifteen minutes later, I received another phone call.
This time, it was from a number I didn’t recognise.
“Your father-in-law has passed away. He was in an accident, and the last call he made was to this number.”
For a few moments, I was speechless.
“What did you just say? Who is this?”
The person on the other end repeated what he had said. His voice sounded tired, as if he had already delivered this news to many people.
I asked him when the accident had happened.
“About ten minutes ago.”
My stomach twisted.
Ten minutes ago...?
That was almost exactly when I had received the first call.
I looked at my phone screen. The call log was still open. My father-in-law’s number was right there in front of me. Staring right back at me.
I called his number again.
The phone was still switched off.
I looked at my wife.
She was still sleeping peacefully, half her face buried in the pillow.
Beware of your wife. She will be the cause of your death.
The words kept echoing in my mind.
I wanted to wake her up and tell her everything, but something held me back. Perhaps it all seemed so unbelievable that I couldn’t even make sense of it myself. Perhaps I simply didn’t know how to tell my wife that her father had called me moments before his death to warn me about her.
I put my phone down.
Just then, it rang again.
I almost dropped it.
My father-in-law’s name was flashing on the screen.
For a moment, my breath caught in my throat. I stared at the screen, hoping the call would disconnect on its own.
But it didn’t.
With trembling hands, I answered.
This time, there was no greeting from the other end. No warning, either.
I simply heard my father-in-law’s voice, low and perfectly clear.
“Have you told her?”
I couldn’t utter a word.
“Listen to me carefully,” he whispered. “No matter what happens, don’t let her leave the house tomorrow.”
And then the call disconnected.
Beside me, my wife opened her eyes.
“Who were you talking to?” she asked, seductively.
I looked at her.
With a sleepy smile, she reached for my hand.
“Was that Papa calling?”

I've started these series of short stories, and this one is also inspired by something I used to read.
There was an Urdu digest that I used to read, and my mother-in-law still reads it. It had these little stories, often so short that you had no idea where they had come from or what they were about to turn into. And that was part of the fun. You never knew until the very end whether you were reading suspense, a thriller, horror, or something else entirely.
The stories were usually marked as translated versions or extracts. Sometimes, the translations were so distorted that you couldn't even make sense of what you'd just read. Nevertheless, I enjoyed them. They were interesting, even if the writing wasn't exactly of the highest literary quality. There was a certain charm to them.
And that's the format I've tried to recreate with my own stories.
I feel that too many disclaimers and explanations can take away from the very experience these stories are meant to offer. Sometimes, the fun lies in not knowing what you're reading until the very end.
So yeah!
