THE MIDNIGHT STONES

in Dream Steem • 5 days ago

They called her witch before the stones ever fell.
Betty — too prayerful,
too quiet,
her children too clean for their liking.

GBAM! GBAM! GBAM!
Every midnight.
Heavy fists from the dark,
throwing rage upon her zinc.

Candle trembling in her hand,
voice trembling in prayer,
while her family folded themselves under blankets,
and the roof wept above them.

Then came the morning of the white chicken.1000204537.jpgMy Prompt/AI Image

She opened her door and froze.
There — in her swept yard,
a white chicken.
Dead.
Neck twisted to its back.
Blood fresh, splashed on earth, on wall, on bucket.

No footprints.
No hole in the fence.
No way in. No way out.1000204531.jpgActual Photo

She screamed.

She ran to the only soul who still spoke to her —
the young man with sleepless, red eyes.

Before she could speak, he whispered,
"Blood was on my door this morning."

That week, the street held its breath.
No greetings. No hellos. Just eyes.

Then the young man fell sick.
Two weeks — he could not stand.
Could not eat.
Skin became cloth over bone.
Eyes sank deep.

And strangely...
the stones stopped.

Only Betty still fetched water for him in the rain.
He thanked her in a voice that was not his.

One night he said,
"I must return to the village.
Something is holding me.
I need a cure."

Betty watched his shadow thin into the road.1000204613.jpgMy Prompt/AI Image

Weeks later, news came on the wind:
He Died.

That evening, the street circled Betty's house like vultures.

"You killed him!"

"I fetched water for him!" she cried,
"I prayed for him!"

No ears heard her.

That night, midnight sharp —
GBAM! GBAM! GBAM!

She ran out with her candle, shaking.

They were falling — not on every roof,
but on hers.
The one whose mouth was loudest
to name Betty a witch.

Thank you for sticking till the end😊

Goshhhh... poor Betty and poor white chicken! I could really feel Betty’s emotions through your poem. You captured them so well! Thank you, @beckymia. I really liked it - probably because I could actually understand it, hehe. 😄

Aww thank you! I'm really happy you connected with Betty, I felt so bad for her and the chicken while writing it. Thanks for the lovely comment!

Incredible verses, because things like that still happen; unfortunately, superstitions persist despite time and the advancement of science.

Thank you so much for reading till the end.
It That's exactly what inspired this piece — how superstition can turn a whole street against someone innocent, even today. Betty was only guilty of being different. I'm glad the message came through.

It's a moralizing story; I wish people would learn to tolerate differences, but those kinds of people are usually closed-minded to new ideas.

They never want to learn, they just want someone to blame. And it's always the quiet, different ones like Betty who suffer for it.

Exactly. What a shame... I hope they didn't throw the chicken in the photo at you. 😢

No they didn't. Till today no one really knows how the chicken got into Betty's backyard.

Rereading your verses, I remembered how during the Middle Ages women who healed were treated as witches, simply because they knew natural remedies.

Today, people are still the same; what they don't understand or what deviates from the norm is discriminated against, even if they do no wrong.Thank you for posting on Dream Steem 🖊️ 📜
