Coleton Fishacre
Coleton Fishacre was the country home of the D’Oyly Carte family, built in the Arts & Crafts style, the property is imbued with Art Deco elegance. Rupert and Lady Dorothy commissioned renowned architect Oswald Milne to design Coleton Fishacre.
Rupert was the son of Richard D’Oyly Carte a famous impresario and hotelier. In 1975 he asked the dramatist W. S. Gilbert and the composer Arthur Sullivan to collaborate on a short comic opera to round out an evening’s entertainment. When that work, Trial by Jury, became a success, Carte put together a syndicate to produce the full-length Gilbert and Sullivan.
He also built the Savoy group including the Savoy Theatre (the first public building lit entirely by electricity) and founded luxury hotels such as the Savoy Hotel, Claridge’s, and the Berkeley.
