POLL: Do You Like to Write Poetry?

I love storytellers. Those old-fashioned storytellers from days gone by, days gone by as in the Middle Ages.

Those storytellers still exist, and you can hire them if you’re organising a medieval festival or, for example, want to liven up a birthday or other party.
Hiring a storyteller is certainly not cheap. Of course, the voice needs to be pleasant to listen to, so it’s wise to ask to tell a short story before you hire someone.

A storyteller isn’t someone who reads a story out in a monotonous voice or simply rattles it off. A good storyteller uses the voices of different characters and puts on a sort of play. That’s the way to captivate listeners. Incidentally, this is something I often find lacking in audiobooks: a captivating voice.

With a good narrator, even the dullest story or the most tedious, incomprehensible poem becomes a pleasure to listen to.

I also love telling stories and writing poems. I absolutely love poems that tell a story, preferably a fairy tale or a fable. There are quite a few of these in Old Dutch, and not just a few lines, no, hundreds of pages long. I’ve written this sort of poetic stories myself, and I still think they’re brilliant. That probably makes me my own biggest fan. Whenever I reread them, I’m amazed about what I wrote.
(To be honest, I don’t find all poems impressive or enjoyable, there are such a boring ones, and there’s nothing wrong with that.)
I also find that I enjoy writing a poem way more than reading one. This is most likely because I love puzzling over words, playing with double meanings, proverbs and sayings.

A story can be an existing (twisted) fairy tale, a fable, or something you’ve made up out of thin air. It can be narrative or in poetic form.

How many of you on Steemit write fictional stories and/or poems?

Who writes for pleasure, perhaps finding more joy in writing than in reading?

They say you have to read a lot to be able to write well. Is that true, or does the same apply here: that those bound by rules never really come to real #creativewriting?

*I hardly dare say it, but… If you write a narrative poem (you, not AI), I’ll reward the good, enjoyable, funny, sad and thought-provoking ones with 5 Steem.

This poll will run for 14 days!

I have to admit, some poems, I do not understand, no matter how many times I read them. And then I wonder, do I need to think a certain way haha. So, poems for me, it depends. I write them when I have an inspiration to. And for me to appreciate poems by others, I have to understand, else I don't appreciate. But when there are comments saying how good it is, I would scratch my head wondering how is it good? Then, I would end up not commenting because I do not know what to say haha.

I love story tellers too, inspiring ones especially. I do enjoy watching motivational story tellers because I need some form of motivation to pump me up sometimes. Even in movies or dramas, I enjoy watching characters who are story tellers. And I love story telling but mostly on my life stories or something I watched or heard. I think my brain is not as creative or imaginative as I want it to be sometimes. I've been thinking to participate in the Exquisite Corpse but my brain doesn't want to co-operate 😅But I do agree that the more we read, the more we experience or the more we hear, it does help with writing.

I've been thinking to participate in the Exquisite Corpse but my brain doesn't want to co-operate 😅

In participating in the Exquisite Corpse, there is (as it seems to me) NO necessarity to co-operate. Let your mind flow and spin up the story, or concatenate an independent fragment by some clever written connecting phrases. ;-)

Aaww thank you @ty-ty for the tips. Sometimes, the mind does go blank. I will try, though like yoda says, do or do not, there is no try 💪.

If you ask me you need to think in a certain way to understand a poem. Given that there are so many different poems, you therefore have to think in so many different ways, and that isn’t always easy. Of course, that doesn’t really matter in itself, because sooner or later there’s bound to be a reader for every writer. Sometimes it clicks straight away and you grasp the meaning of a poem; other times, it remains a complete mystery. I often find this happens with poems that are classified as literature, and indeed with books that are classified as literature too. I’ve no idea who decided they’re literature; they’re often incredibly boring and don’t really encourage you to read them.

I think that if your brain isn’t playing ball, you should just try again a bit later; there’ll come a moment when it clicks, and if it doesn’t, that’s no big deal either. I don’t always understand what’s written either, and when that happens, I simply stop reading that sort of thing. Sometimes it clicks, but conversely, there are also poems that I used to like and which I now just find to be odd little rhymes. Perhaps you need to be in the right frame of mind for it, or you need to be at a certain stage in your life. I also think that if you’re part of a circle of poets, you’ll soon start doing it yourself; the same goes for a circle of storytellers or freewriters.

Thank youuuuu, thank youuuu! ❣️

Ah it does make sense, the "clicking". It is true, when things jive, they jive. And you don't need to even try. It just flows effortlessly. I guess it is the same with art in general? Some art that we see, we would feel it, we get it while some, we wonder what it is. And this too:

Perhaps you need to be in the right frame of mind for it, or you need to be at a certain stage in your life.

I do realize that the things we like changes over time, depending at which stage we are in life. Poetry may well be one of those things. And interestingly, when I do write a poem, I didn't intend to at first but the words that flow are poem-ish (mainly because the mind didn't feel like writing whole sentences hahaha), which is how I decided then to turn them into a poem.

I recognise the part about not wanting to write whole sentences 🤣

It's my pleasure. By the way, if we talk about cheese overhere lately I always think of your toast photography. 🤣

I like poems, though some are difficult to understand. Anyway they are the writer expression maybe not meant to be understood by others.

I also find storytelling poems very enjoyable, I love rhymes, so sometimes felt so inclined to chain on that game with words. But not for a while, I feel blocked in many ways. I like to play but sometimes I let myself get tangled up in rules (all right, I'm a mess haha)

So, yes but it depends on my mood.

I think fables in verses are so lovely.

(The Flute-Playing Donkey, by Tomás de Iriarte, Spanish)

I loved what you wrote about storytellers. It reminded me of the university "cuentacuentos"; we really enjoyed a seminar on that subject. It requires a certain knowledge and managment of the performing arts.

Playing around with different voices makes for a fun reading experience, too. I enjoy reading aloud. I used to read to my students and my daughter, changing my voice and dramatizing the text in some way. I think it's highly moving to start enjoy reading.

If it comes to poetry there are those without rules. Just a dose of feelings and you are good.

In December we write poems more like rhymes about the "bad" habits of the those you give a gift. I assume that habit will die soon.

Story telling is an art. It is what had to do at primary school and also highschool for our exam Ditch (not the other languages).

I was curious about that tradition, the Sinterklaas. It's an interesting way to be sincere to others in a creative way, maybe some choose to improve things, maybe some feel mistreated, I don't know.

I wish literature and oral performances (maybe not as a final but continuos evaluation) were given more impulse in our educational system.

Thank you very much for the support 🐱

As little children we had a poetry booklet which you have to the teacher and other students and they write a poem intonit. That is what primary school looked like. By the way also grandparents, aunts etcetera wrote in it.

Nice! I've just read it's another tradition you have.

Thank you very much 💓

I believe it longer exists. The poetry booklet is replaced by the friendship booklet where children only have to fill out their names, personal data, glue their photo in it and write down where they met. Stupidity and brain loss settled...

During my student years I became traumatized by poetry, I even came to despise it, because the curriculum insisted on making us study the most boring ones that existed in Spanish.

I also used to find all that stuff about meter and rhyme very convoluted... But then, recently, I discovered poems so good that they seem like a story in verse.

I came to the conclusion that it is romantic poems that boring me.

At one time I wanted to be a writer, but it turns out it's not easy at all. A lot of general knowledge is required, Besides creativity. For now, I think there are too many good works to read instead to trying to write something bad 😞

Thanks a lot for your support 😊

I believe I know that type of poems...
I wouldn't call the ones I dislike or don't understand romantic but written by a boring guy and romanticised by a club of old guys or the state because there was no one else they liked to lift.
I doubt the ones who promoted these read them all themselves.

Hehe, I hadn't thought of that! Since everything in life is political, literature is surely not exempt from its intrigues and machinations.

I remember when Paulo Coelho was all the rage, and I bought one of his books...I've never been so disappointed by an author, and I regretted buying it. But since I paid for it, I had to read it!

Previously, I ONLY wrote poetry. Prose pieces gradually came to mind, really only through blogging here on Steem. Poetry is important to me because it allows me to write in a more controlled way. And that, in turn, helps me think in a more controlled way… Reading poetry was, of course, where it all began. But there are only a few that really speak to me (those by @ty-ty are definitely among them ;-)))

That is interesting. For poetry I have to be in a certain mood or actually have a certain rhytm in my head. If that's the case I can write them easily.

Interesting it helps you to think in a more controlled way. I doubt this is the case with me, more like the opposite.

Thank you dear, I am here.
I'll write a poem that'll pull your hair.
I'm a joker who love beer.
I love pranks and no one gets spared.

🤔

You are a clown indeed, but beer?
Give it a new try. I wait

I am a clown,
I make those laugh whose spirit is down.
If you like me, you can give me a beer,
I'll be happy and give you hug my dear.

Check my latest post.

What type of beer do you like?

I don't have any specific choice. You can bring any type of beer for me. But be careful! Do not bring a woolly bear with sharp claws.

You still make me laugh!

Would this be regarded as a storry telling poem?

https://steemit.moecki.online/hive-146118/@ty-ty/erlkoenig-0-9-aus-dem-tagebuch-eines-dichterfuersten

It's not a new one, but as an example what you possibly could mean.
Or is your scope more on something like an epos like the following?

https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nibelungenlied

I like both and already read you and commented.

If it comes to your second link. I favour those two.

These are two of my favourites:

https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karel_ende_Elegast

And

https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_den_vos_Reynaerde

Now I think about it, these might be forbidden in the nearest future considering EU laws

Alt-ehrwürdige Epen!
(ancient and venerable epics)

Today I know a bit more..for example that my maternal grandmother her anchestor was Karel 🤣

My vote for Yes, but it depends on my mood

I think I love writing stories in my mind. I love and prefer having freedom of writing than following routine or specific category to get more recognition and earning. I do diary blog but that's something the way I want and rarely perform contest writing or blogs that feels like stress.

Hope I explained it well, if you want to know more, feel free to ask! I'm here to reply, it could be a nice conversation!

Thanks, blessings to you!

I also find that I enjoy writing a poem way more than reading one. This is most likely because I love puzzling over words, playing with double meanings, proverbs and sayings.

Me for my own part, I prefer writing poems in a sort of some stream of consciousness. Not only, but most preferred.

Does that mean you have a certain rhytm in your head or?

Mostly, there is such a rhythm, or a varying rhythm, or a combination of rhythms.
Sometimes, it runs more like prose.

That certain rhytm I have when I write but a certain song on the radio can also do the trick.
