Apple

In Dutch, I could write a long piece,or rather, a story, in which I could string together all sorts of proverbs and sayings relating to apples. As I don’t actually know whether all these proverbs exist in English as well, I’m giving up, it would take me too much time otherwise, and anyone who only has five to ten minutes to freewrite should write in one go.

The apple, or better, the apple pie is a type of cake that used to be a standard treat on birthdays, and today is my youngest’s birthday; I’d actually almost forgotten about it, at least as far as wishing her a happy birthday was concerned. It’s a good thing she is a nightowl, goes to bed late and gets up late too, so I was still in time.
What’s the birthday wish? That’s a bit of a non-starter – we mainly gift the same things because we’re so creative, so I sent a box without asking for wishes first. A box, of course, that disappeared and required quite a bit of phoning around to track down. In the end, it turned out to be in a parcel locker, and of course the code hadn’t been given.

Back to the apple pie: my grandothers used to make it, on Saturdays there was cake and sometimes butter cake too. It’s still the sort of cake I love most, and it’s quite simple to make. Sadly, the apple pies for sale aren’t all that great, even if they’re labelled ‘Grandma’s recipe’. I can tell you for a fact that my grandmother made hers completely differently, same for the ones II used to bake.

Then, of coursese, we’ve also got apple sauce! Apple sauce is something we’re brought up on, quite literally. It goes in yoghurt and is particularly popular with little children to cover dinner. Apple sauce has quite a strong flavour and is sweet, so if there’s something they don’t like, it helps them swallow it down.
Apple sauce with chips is also absolutely delicious, and the birthday girl in question eats it in particular, because she doesn’t like mayonnaise, ketchup or all that other ‘rubbish’ as she calls sauces.

And what to think about the apple peel in the photo?
My grandmother used to sit there peeling apples like that for the apple fritters on New Year’s Eve. I can do it too, but I don’t really see the point, as cutting the apple into pieces first and then peeling it is much quicker.
Out of the Peels Apple syrup van be cooked.
I recently heard in an audiobook that one character told another you should peel an apple in one long strip and then put it in water. The peel will form the first letter of your future husband's name. That in itself would be a miracle.
According to the person in question, it would always be the letter ‘O’. So I decided to give it a go, as we’ve got a few apples lying about that nobody really wants to eat, so we’re saving them to make an apple pie. To be honest, I can’t see the ‘O’, and the first letter it formed was an ‘S’. That ‘S’ was actually formed by a piece of apple peel that was still a bit tangled up, so I had to pick it apart. This is the result: no ‘O’ and no ‘S’.

Happy birthday to your birthday girl! 🎂

Hope she had a wonderful day and finally got the box from the parcel locker.

Nothing beats a real grandma's recipe, the ones from the store are never the same.

Wishing her health, happiness and many more birthdays! 🎂

She did after my son kept calling the customer service and wasted all his phone credit. They finally five him the code. It is clear the delivery company is not up to work and easily forgets or simply does as they like.

Thank you for your best wishes.
