Chapter 27: The Ghost in the Machine
The Predator in the Abyss第二十六章:深渊里的捕食者
Thousands of eyes staring at once. It actually felt heavy. Not in a poetic way—the sheer, raw volume of data blasting off that massive meat-and-metal brain hit my neural implants like a freight train. My ears rang, a high-pitched squeal drowning out the booming thud of the thing's heartbeat down below.
Return. A thousand overlapping voices scraped against the inside of my skull. Didn't even use my ears. Subject 47... integration incomplete.
I heard a choked gasp. Lu Yan was swaying, dark blood leaking from both nostrils. That oversized organic server wasn't just looking at us. It was actively trying to force a wireless data-dump of its entire nightmare consciousness straight into our localized networks.
"Climb! Off the ladder!" I shouted. My mouth tasted like copper and synthetic adrenaline. I grabbed her harness and practically threw her onto a narrow, rust-eaten catwalk hugging the silo wall.
Below, the fog violently twisted. Something shot up—a massive cord of twitching grey muscle and braided black optical wire. It hit the ladder right where we just were. The impact pulverized the iron rungs and the stasis pod next to it, sending a shower of screaming metal down into the dark.
We ran. Didn't look back. My bleeding left hand left smears of red on the handrail. About ten meters ahead I spotted a circular pressure hatch. Sticking my combat knife into the locking gear, I cranked it, bypassing the pneumatic seal. We dove inside, dragging the heavy iron door shut and spinning the locking wheel until the metal groaned and seized.
The blue light was gone. That awful heartbeat muffled into a dull throb through the concrete floor. We hit the damp tunnel wall and slid down, choking on stale air in total darkness.
I dug for my backup flashlight. My hands wouldn't stop shaking. The pale beam clicked on, cutting the gloom, and then a smell hit me.
Not the sterile stink of those clone freaks. Not the rotting meat smell from the pit. It was cheap tobacco. That, and the sharp copper tang of fresh blood.
I aimed the light down. Heavy, bloody boot prints tracking deeper into the corridor. Right next to the first print was a cigarette stub. Dead ember, intentionally crushed under a heel.
"Old Chen," Lu Yan breathed. She wiped her lip. Her eyes were wide, caught between desperate hope and sheer panic. "The real Chen. He actually made it out of the drainage channel."
"Keep your gun up. Down here, seeing isn't believing," I told her.
We tracked the blood. The tunnel sloped down, winding through a mess of dead power cables until we spilled into a small, choked-up relay station. Dead server racks lined the walls, covered in decades of dust.
The bloody prints stopped dead at a rusted swivel chair facing the main terminal. Someone was in it. Slumped forward, facing away. Wearing the exact same tactical vest as us.
"Chen?" My heart hammered against my ribs. I kept my knife ready and signaled Lu Yan to watch the rear.
The 71-hour countdown pulsed a warning red in the corner of my eye as I stepped closer. Reached out. Spun the chair around.
And stopped breathing.
It wasn't Old Chen. It was a corpse. A mummified Pan-Asia researcher in a rotting lab coat, wearing a stolen, blood-soaked tactical vest over it. This guy had been dead for fifty years, his skin dried into brown leather.
That wasn't the bad part, though.
Hammered directly into the rotting skull was a brand-new, blinking cybernetic neural port. And shoved right into that port, hot-wired with raw copper, was Old Chen's tactical radio.
Before I could even wrap my head around it, the radio spat static.
It wasn't picking up a remote transmission. It was receiving an electrical pulse straight from the mummy's dead brain.
Crack. The dry bone of the mummy's jaw snapped open. A voice came out of that ruined throat. But it wasn't Old Chen's growl. And it wasn't the giant brain either.
It was Lu Yan. A flat, dead-calm copy of the woman standing right behind me.
Containment breach imminent, Yun Feng, the dead thing whispered, empty eye sockets locking onto mine. Why did you bring her back here?
