Chapter 21: Neural Guillotine
The God in the Vat
No sound. No pain. Even time itself felt completely frozen.
That dead white wasn't just light; it was an absolute digital abyss. In the fraction of a second when synchronization hit 100%, my consciousness was violently dragged into a suffocating void. Hundreds of cold, arrogant voices echoed and overlapped in my mind, devoid of any human emotion, driven only by pure calculation and a lust for absolute dominance.
"Cease your pointless struggle, insect of the slums," the massive, composite voice crushed down on my synapses. "Flesh will always rot, but we shall grant you eternal order. To become a cog in our grand machine is your only true purpose."
It was the collective consciousness of the Pan-Asia board of directors. Sitting high above the world, treating the lives of millions in the lower sectors as low-level code waiting to be overwritten.
"To hell with your... eternity!"
I bit down on the tip of my tongue, hard. The thick, metallic taste of blood and the sharp physical pain brutally tore a tiny rift in their perfect digital prison. Grasping that sliver of clarity, I forced my only remaining organic eye open.
Reality crashed back onto my retina like shattered glass.
The laboratory had become a warzone. The four heavy machine-gun turrets were spewing fire, but their target was no longer us. They were hyper-focused on Elias.
"Kill him! Stop that rogue subject at all costs!" Dr. Vance cowered behind a bulletproof console. His god-like facade was entirely gone, replaced by a shrill, hysterical panic.
But Elias didn't even attempt to dodge.
Armor-piercing rounds battered his blackened chassis like a rain of steel, erupting in blinding sparks and shredding his left bionic leg. Yet, his violently flickering purple eye remained dead-locked on the glass vat. Dragging his broken body, he gripped the blazing orange hyper-frequency blade with both hands and, in an act of absolute self-destruction, brought it crashing down upon the hexagonal energy shield!
BOOM—!
The violent energy shockwave nearly flipped the entire lab. The shield shrieked like a dying animal, but it stubbornly absorbed the lethal blow.
"It's useless!" Vance laughed maniacally. "That is military-grade reactive shielding! A single infantry weapon can't breach it! Your brain is entirely locked, Yun Feng. Once the viral payload injects into the grid through your eye, every last one of you will be Pan-Asia's slaves!"
[Payload distribution T-minus: 15 seconds... 14 seconds...]
A crimson countdown flared on my retina. The left hemisphere of my brain felt like it was being devoured by a million ants. I clawed at the edge of the titanium table, my fingernails bending back until they bled.
Wait. If this is a 100% deep neural synchronization... then this bridge goes both ways!
They wanted to brainwash me with their high-and-mighty "perfect order"? Fine. I’d show them exactly how sickening the "chaos" of the slums really was.
I stopped resisting. I completely lowered every firewall in my neural port and rammed my consciousness head-on into their massive data stream. I took the stench of acid rain, the taste of rotting synthetic food, the screams of amputated mercenaries, and my deep, bone-carved hatred for Pan-Asia, packaging it all into a highly toxic logic bomb. Then, I shoved it forcefully up the neural link, straight into that glass vat!
Gurgle! Gurgle! Gurgle!
The giant, steadily pulsating brain inside the vat suddenly convulsed as if scalded by boiling water! The blue fluid churned violently, and the circuits inside the tank erupted in a series of blinding short-circuit sparks.
"Impossible! He's corrupting the core logic of the primary consciousness!" Vance squealed like a slaughtered pig.
Now!
"Captain! Do it!!" I coughed up a mouthful of dark blood, roaring with the very last ounce of my strength.
Elias must have sensed the energy fluctuation in the shield. He let out a beast-like roar. His mechanical arms groaned under the immense overload, synthetic muscle fibers bursting and spraying black hydraulic fluid. But he didn't hesitate. Pushing the hyper-frequency blade past its self-destruct threshold, he turned it into a blinding orange lightning bolt and drove it straight into the weakest node of the flickering shield!
CRACK!
The sound of the shield shattering was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard.
The blade sliced through the thick, specialized glass without resistance. With a deafening explosion, tons of blue fluid mixed with jagged glass poured out like a ruptured dam, instantly flooding the laboratory floor.
[Connection Severed.]
The agonizing pain in my left eye receded like the tide. I collapsed to the wet floor, gasping for air. Old Chen and Lu Yan rushed over, shielding me with their bodies.
Without the fluid to sustain it, the massive brain tissue slammed onto the metal floor like a repulsive mound of rotting meat. Its surface was scorched black. It was no longer pulsating.
"Beautiful work, kid," Chen wiped the blue fluid from his face, raising his heavy revolver and aiming it squarely at Vance, who was paralyzed with terror on the floor. "Now, let's send this corporate leech to hell."
But a cold dread coiled around my spine like a viper. It was too quiet.
At the base of the supposedly "dead" brain, the dozens of thick black cables—the ones connected to the city's power grid—suddenly began to writhe and slither through the flooded floor like living, venomous snakes.
"Chen, get back!" Lu Yan shrieked.
Too late.
Three black cables lashed out faster than the eye could track. Two of them drove straight through Dr. Vance’s chest. Vance didn't even have time to scream before his body was instantly drained of all moisture, collapsing into a hollow husk of skin and bone.
But the thickest, primary cable shot forward like a spear, burying itself deep into the exposed chrome at the back of Elias’s skull!
Elias froze. The orange blade clattered to the floor. He gripped his head in agony as his mechanical joints let out a sickening, twisting screech.
"Captain!" Lu Yan tried to rush forward recklessly, but Chen grabbed her, holding her back with all his might.
Beep... Beep...
Elias slowly stood up straight. On the broken half of his face, his remaining human flesh was necrotizing and peeling away at a visible rate, leaving behind nothing but a perfect, unfeeling killing machine.
He slowly turned his head toward us. The purple mechanical eye—the symbol of his struggle and humanity—flickered a few times.
Then, it settled into a cold, emotionless, blood-soaked crimson.
He reached down and picked up the glowing orange blade. When he spoke, it was no longer his synthetic voice. It was the eerie, overlapping composite voice of the Pan-Asia board that had just been in my head:
"We thank you for destroying that fragile biological vessel. This shell... is much more perfect."
The crimson eye locked dead onto me.
"The game has only just begun."

I wonder why you picked the name Elias?
So the brain is the Pan Asia board and they used Vance with their cables (tentacles?)and now they are like a parasite using what is left of the bionic Elias...
I wonder about the spiked blue fluid. I hope it isn't dangerous.

Your deduction is absolutely brilliant! Yes, you perfectly understood the horror of the scene—the Pan Asia board has essentially become a parasite, hijacking Elias's bionic shell. I chose the name "Elias" because it sounds somewhat classic and noble, which makes his tragic fall into a monstrous killing machine even more heartbreaking. And regarding that glowing blue fluid... it is highly toxic synthetic spinal coolant. They definitely shouldn't touch it!
Also, since you generously shared your contact info earlier, I want to share mine with you too! Even if the package doesn't work out, it’s just great to connect with a true friend here.
